Hello all,
Long-time lurker, but first-time posting here on the forum.
I recently came into an excellent deal on a Pentax PF-80ED-A spotter. So far, I am extremely pleased with the quality of the optics in this scope and the resolution of the scope for the money. I am now looking to invest in a little protection for it.
Specifically, I am trying to find a good quality cover for the scope. I am looking for something that I can install on the scope and leave it on that will offer protection for the scope when in the field, mounted on a tripod or spotting scope stand. I was very interested in something along the lines of the ScopeCoat "flack jacket" like the product that Zeiss offers (which I think is made by ScopeCoat) and is pictured here:
Here is my problem...I e-mailed with Lisa at ScopeCoat and not only do they not make a cover like that for my scope, they indicated that they don't have time to make one as a custom order because of other irons they have in the fire at the moment. Also, and this is probably the bigger problem...they indicated that it would cost $200 for a custom job, plus the cost of the cover ($75-100) to have one made up (which is a little more...okay 2x-3x as much...what I was thinking I'd have to spend).
Does anybody have any suggestions, alternatives, options, etc. for what I am looking for? I am open to all suggestions. This is my first "decent" spotter and I want to protect it as much as possible since it will see plenty of time in the field.
Thanks in advance...

When purchased new this spotting scope should come with a view-through case (Pentax part number 70931). If yours does not have one, then I will assume you bought your scope used. Nevertheless, you still should be able to contact Pentax's customer service dept. and purchase one of these covers. They are also available from a number of other retailers. They sell for around $70.00 In fact SWFA may be able to sell/order one for you. It certainly can't hurt to call them up and ask...

As discussed over in the accessories area, ScopeShieldAlaska also makes custom spotting scope covers. These are full-cover stretch neoprene. We just finished making one for a large Montana outfitter, with his logo on it, for a Zeiss Diascope 65mm. We make the cover to the scope specifications. They are similar to the riflescope cover, which you can google at ScopeShieldAlaska.

How long has this been going on? I purchased my 80ED-A last fall and I did not get a cover. |

Mine was actually advertised as a "Demo" but "with factory box, paperwork, accessories and warranty." Upon removing it from the box, there is no way that it could have seen much "demo" time unless demo is sitting beneath a glass enclosure/case in someone's store. Looks BNIB without a single handling mark or anything.
If it was supposed to come with a factory OEM case/cover...mine was MIA. I'll get back with the outfit I bought it from and see what I can find out. Could be a simple shipping/packaging error that I was none the wiser about until now. if I get nothing there, I'll try Pentax. I surfed around on the Internet and found some good pics of the Pentax OEM case and it looks pretty nice. Not sure about the level of padding, etc., but from the photos, it appears to be worth considering at the very least. Not to mention, it was specifically made for my spotter.
Thanks again for all the input, folks. It is appreciated.

I bought the same scope last year (great glass for the money) and mine had a cover, it is a nice cover. If the guys who sold you the scope don't have the cover, buy it from Pentax, it is worth the $$.

Well, I talked to the outfit I got the spotter from. Turns out that they had the cover/case that was supposed to ship with my scope. Apparently it was left behind while everything else shipped to me as they thought it went with another scope. I confirmed it was for the 80mm Angled scope and they said it was and thay they'd send it out to me via USPS Priority free of charge!! I should hopefully have it in hand by Saturday at the latest if they get it in the mail today. If not, it'll be here first of next week. Hopefully that will take care of my case/cover needs for now.
Thanks to everyone for their help. I'll post up some pics of the setup once it arrives.

Just off the top of my head I can think of four circumstances that might possibly lead to the lack of the cover...
1. If the scope was purchased used.
2. If the scope was purchased as a demo or a refurb.
3. If the scope was purchased on the so-called grey market.
4. If the scope was purchased new, but from a dealer who was selling off a supply of old stock.

I too have the 80ED scope and agree I really like it, however, I find the cover to way too bulky and loose fitting, and an looking for a tight fitting similar to the Swarovski, or a good neoprene one.

I also have several additional eyepieces I am looking to sell, but cannot post them until I get my requisite 50 posts to show I am serious or at least persistent. |

I just got a Pentax 65ED II a and the SMC Zoom eyepiece.
It did come with a nice case but tihe this particular eyepiece ~ it will not totally enclose the scope and eyepiece.
The case is nice and high quality and worth about $70 from the sold separate accessories I see but it would be nice to have a (soft) case that would allow to be completely enclosed when not in use.

The resurrection of this post from last month reminds me... what ever happened to 'ol dahoffman72? It's been a whole month since his last post and he remains firmly set at a total of 5.
Not working too hard on that "requisite 50" is he?
Could it be that I was (again) right and he was indeed just trying to "circumvent the system?"
Ach, this being right all the time can be a heavy burden, but I will continue to endure for the sake of all the mere mortals needing guidance...
