I just got a Marlin 917VR (.17HMR) and it is my first rifle.  I'm a rifle novice.

I want to mount the Burris Fullfield II 3-9x40 scope on it.  Does this scope come with lens covers or do I need to buy some?  Which covers are good?  Do they come in sizes?

The receiver is tapped and a pair of mounts with four screws were included with the rifle.

Are these mounts decent?  If I must use other mounts, which should I purchase?

What kind of rings should I use?  I believe the scope is 1", but I do not know that for sure.

I will be using this mostly for target shooting and learning the basics of rifle marksmanship and use of a scope.

I've never been hunting, but it could happen one day.

Cost IS a factor for me.

Thank you all in advance for your guidance.

Good luck with your new toy! As far as the scope you mentioned I think it would be a great choice, but if you can afford a little more go for the Fullfield II in 4.5-14x42 as the 17 is good out to about 150 yards and with small critters the extra magnification will help. The mounts supplied will be fine, just make sure they are snug before mounting up the scope. For rings any quality ones will work such as Burris, Leupold, Weaver, though I prefer those made by Warne. You'll need them to fit a "rail" type mount also known as Weaver or Picattinny.Yes, you will need them to fit a 1" scope tube. The scope will come with lens covers and though they are basic they will do the job.Have fun!

917VR

Have a professional mount it!  Whoever you bougth the rifle from (store) or scope from should provide this service for free.  If you didn't buy either from a store, find a store or gunsmith in your area and have them do it.  They usually only charge $5 or so and it will be well worth it!

I put a FFII 3-9X40 on my Son's 22-250 and it seems ok.......... wish I would have gotten a Signature Select, but didn't have the extra $$ at the time.

Let us know how it all works out.

take em!
