I am saving up for a new scope for my Rem. 700 PSS and am considering a Mil Dot reticle scope.  My question(s) concern variable power scopes.  When a variable  scope is zoomed in and out, the reticle does not change (in most scopes).  Does this mean the ranging/measuring feature only works at one setting?  I would think that such a system could lead to errors if you did not have the scope at the correct zoom.  What zoom do manufacturers typically make a milrad = 3.6"@100yd?  (Do they use the highest setting or the lowest setting?)

I plan to use the rifle for target and groundhog shooting and was considering getting a "budget minded" scope, but have decided to save up for a while and get something that will make me happy for the forseeable future instead of right up untill I go shooting.

Right now I am leaning toward the Super Sniper as I have read positive things about it and because I generally leave my variable scopes cranked up to high most of the time.  Does anyone have opinion/experience about pros/cons of fixed vs. variable power for this sort of scope use

Thanks for your input.

all ture mildot reticles are the same, becuase 1 mil is about 3.6MOA, and the super sniper is one nice damn scope for the money, and it easily compares to the higher priced leupold MK4's, and i wouldnt be suprised if the SS10X42 will outpreform the MK4 10X.it is one awesome scope and i think a SS10X42 will serve you well, especially if you dont want to have to spend the money on a scope again.

Your assumption is correct.  1st focal plane (reticle gets larger and smaller with power) scopes will subtend 3.6" on any power setting.  2nd focal plane scopes just do it on one certain power (usually the highest).  This possibility for error is one of the main reasons the military uses fixed power scopes.

The http://www.riflescopes.com/departments/264/rifle_scopes/super_sniper/super_sniper_scopes.htm - SS 10x42 would be an excellent choice as would the http://www.riflescopes.com/departments/255/rifle_scopes/weaver/weaver_tactical.htm - Weaver Tactical 4.5-14x44 1st focal plane mil dot.....$499.95
