I've been a viewer for sometime, but just joined to request some help.  I am a fan (for whatever reason) of the Redfield TX 27 scope line.  I am interested in procuring additional ones but given their short life 10 years ago, I am unable to locate any new or used ones outside of the 4x model.   If anyone has any info on the whereabouts of new or used TX's (excluding the 4x model), I would really appreciate it.  Thanks  Mark   mailto:ganadore@wi.rr.com - ganadore@wi.rr.com

Once in a while I see some on eBay. ( I am an eBay-a-holic...)  I have seen NIB TX 27s there several times----quite a few months ago.....variables   5X15 or something big like that.  [ I understood that the turret caps used to rub against the dials and when you threaded the caps back on that they sometimes changed your settings.....is this true? ]

Anyway, welcome to SWFA.

Yes, the turret caps can rub and change the dial settings if you tighten them down all the way.  How they messed that one up is beyond me.  You definetely need to re-zero the dials after sighting the scope in so that you can periodical check them (to verify the settings are still on 0) and you can only tighten the caps up so far after feeling the resistance or you will feel the dials move.    I will keep an eye on on Ebay (I've never seen one out there yet).  Some months I am a daily vistor performing a Redfield search and other months it is a hit or miss.  Hopefully I can find a few.

Thanks for the heads up

Mark

This problem can be corrected by using washers at the bottom of the cap. I have seen washers in a nylon composite (BLACK) at Home Depot that will fit the bill. Good luck in your search and WELCOME TO OT

Thought about looking for an o-ring and doing something like you mentioned above.  I haven't got around to looking for one.  I will have to stop in at Home Depot and see what they got.   Thanks for the tip.  Hopefully I can locate another TX or two.  Mark

We forgot to ask you how does that scope perform---how clear is it, etc.  I know that was Redfield's last big expensive scope before they went aground.

In daylight for me, the TX models I have appear brighter than my newer Leupold VXIII and Mark II  (even with it's 1998 technology), but not as bright as my Zeiss Conquest.     I am happy with the TX's there.

In low light or dusk, their performance drops off a little faster than I would like and I would rank them equal to or slightly below the Leupolds I have (with no comparison to the Conquest).     Also, the 4x model must have a lower parallax setting for it is a little blurry out beyond 50-60 yds (where a cheap low end NIB 4x Tracker that I have has a sharp image out beyond 100yds).  It really isn't noticable unless you compare them side by side.

Newer scopes such as the Conquest series definetely have better glass and probably better overall quality, but I grew up using Redfields back in the 80's and the TX series became my favorite scope.    Hopefully I can locate a few new ones sitting on the shelf somewheres or find someone who is willing to part with theirs.  Mark

Due to some leads from this site, I was able to locate a few Redfield TX-27 scopes.   I am still interested in locating both the 3.5-14x40 and 3.5-14x50 TX-27 models.  Any input on those would be appreciated.  Thanks again for the input I've already received.    Mark

I thought my 4x tx-27 scope was one of the finest scopes I had ever used and it was clearly superior to my Leupold 6x42. I removed the turret caps upon arriving at the range and proceeded to zero in my 260 mtn rifle. After zeroing my rifle I reapplied the turret caps and returned home. The next time I went to the range I shot a three shot group and discovered that I didn't hit the paper. I thought I had some big time problems with my rifle. I removed the caps and went through the entire sighting in process again and once again I ended up shooting sub MOA groups with my favorite handload. Just by chance I noticed that the turret caps felt a little weird when I put them back on. I soon discovered that the adjustments were moving when I screwed the caps on tight. After trial and error with various "o" rings which didn't allow the caps to even contact the threads I found the solution. I was at a dollar store and found a bag of Suave scrunchies which I stretched over the adjustment turrets before applying the caps and they worked like a charm. One dollar for a bag of fifty. How many people have been frustrated by this problem, who never found what was even causing the problem let alone a solution to the problem? It's hard to believe that this fine scope could be derailed by a problem like this. I've owned $5.00 3/4" .22 scopes that didn't even have a problem like this. I wonder if the 4x model is the only one that has this problem?
