Subject: Big Ammo Price Increase

I purchase factory ammo from several internet companies.  I noticed today that one of the companies I check had big price increases across the board.  If it's okay I'll give the name.  I hope this is not going to happen with the others.

Wait till Obama takes office, I've heard about a 500% increase.  What your seeing now is probably a seasonal price increase.

I thought about that - a seasonal increase.  But this appears to be isolated (so far) to one company.  The increase is about 10% across the board.  It looks like gouging.

I checked again and the price increases are more around 20% on ammo for that particular company.  There are 4 or 5 sites active on the web (in America) and we all know their names.  I'd strongly suggest checking and comparing prices.  It will be very obvious who the gouger is.

It is absoulutely gouging!! obama won/bought the vote. And because he commented on ammo price increase some people are stocking up thinking that he "may" pose more tax on it. BUT! nothing has changed otherwise. Most markets have already raised prices due to fuel cost, so seasonal or not any major price increase would be trying to milk some peoples fears. Gun manufacturers love to hear poloticians "talk" about banning or limiting specific guns, because they know it will usually bring a hay day of paniced sales. Now it looks like the ammo market might get it's turn. It's so incredible, I've seen times when we were sent to Ft. Jackson SC for weapons qual. and they gave us 22 adaptors for our 16's because "The Army don't have ammo for us" What??!! You've got to be kiddin me!!. If I'd had two hours notice I could have went to a friends house and picked up enough 223 for everybody to qualify and have an extra mag for fun. What got me the most about that is I've seen with my own eyes train car loads of the stuff sittin on various bases just surplus. Well it may at some point cost alot more but if it goes up now it is because people are driving demand up due to fear. If anybody really believes they need to stock up on ammo for defense of any sort, they'd be wise to just pick up some more buckshot and maybe some slugs. Then if you find yourself need to actually fight and need something for longer shots your hunting rifle is your best option. When it came to clearing buildings or stopping cars. If I couldn't have my SAW then my shotgun was my next choice. It is the same here. And the 16's are great, a very good weapon. But not always the best choice. If the military would give their soldiers an appropriate amount of trigger time with the 16's our losses would show the improvment. Any way I hope that people don't drive prices up by a needless frinzy of panic. But they probably will. Loco

Sgt. D.  Although I wasn't thinking about the panic/fear motivation for folks to stock up on ammo (and guns) I suspect this may very likely push prices up - law of supply and demand.  It could happen.

But what I was alluding to was a specific example of apparent gouging.  If you buy ammo on-line you will be aware of the 4 or 5 biggest ammo sellers.  If you are not google discount ammo or something similar and you'll come up with some names.  One of these companies prices will astound you when you compare them with the others.  I've purchased from them in the past but when I saw the recent +20% increase in price I was outraged.  I thought at first maybe it was just one brand or caliber but the more I compared it appears they increased their prices across their whole line of ammo.

Please, if you buy ammo on-line, compare prices.  If you run across this particular company it will be abundantly obvious their prices are out of line with the other companies.  DO NOT BUY FROM THEM.

Duce.  I've seen that too.  But nothing like the gouging I saw last week.  Has anybody else found it?

Outdoor Life's December/January issue has an article called 'Copper Crunch'.  The author points to dramatically increasing commodity prices because of demand from developing countries, especially China and India, over the past couple of years.  This demand has decreased just as rapidly from the world's economies slowing.  We should see cheaper ammo as these prices filter down to manufacturers.

This has nothing to do with the price gouging of one on-line seller.  I just thought folks would find the information useful.

Only if demand, or I should say lack of demand forces it. I think, once the rush to stock up drops off then unless something else comes up the over-stocks "Might" bring it in check. Only time will tell. It's like the stock market. If I were ever going to invest, NOW is the time!
I'm hoping Winchester tries to get involved, then if sells drop of, that is when I'll stock up.

It's the hunting season, and many stores try to make some profit on that.
Second, the Obama price increase has become such an urban legend, that guns and ammo sales are through the roof. Based on that, i bet some companies do some serious gouging.
Now, with US, China, and rest of the world economies in recession, much lower fuel prices, lower demand for materials like copper, tin, and lead, i am pretty sure that we will see lower ammo prices by spring.
As far as the Obama scare goes, the Dems will probably try and succeed in no more that what the Clinton administration achieved: a ban on folding stocks and high capacity magazines, and probably criminal background checks introduced at gun shows.
If they scale down the Iraq operations, and the recession continues, there will probably be plenty of surplus 7.62x51, 7.62x39, and 9mm again available in a year or two. The only question is: will we have money to buy it?

Roll your own, it's cheaper and you really do get a better product.

EDIT: SORRY GUYS.  I THOUGHT THE PREVIOUS POSTING DID NOT POST SO I TRIED THIS ONE.  I'M DELETING THE PREVIOUS ONE AND LEAVING THIS ONE BECAUSE IT EXPRESSES MY THOUGHTS MORE SUCCINCTLY.

I agree anweis.  If this worldwide recession is as long and deep as predicted unemployment will rise dramatically (some say more than 10%).  That will very significantly decrease demand for ammo and push prices down in a big way.  We could enjoy lower prices for several years barring bigger problems in Iraq and Afghanistan.

However, if all the U.S. bail-outs do not work anything is possible, including a depression scenario.  A depression would not have to look like the 30's.  I've seen depressions defined as two years of negative growth.  This is not out of the realm of possibilities.  I'd guess ammo production would be drastically cut (especially the premium stuff) and it could become scarce.

I'm hoping that the Dems will remember what a complete trouncing they received after passing that first weapons ban legislation and will think good and hard about trying for a repeat.

ive got a better one for you guys, im thinking that until this whole economy issue is fixed that we shouldnt have to worry about things a ton, they should (if they do there jobs) have priorites with the economy and such so hopefully it takes them a few years to work it out. i expect the prices of ammo to go down starting early next year, the price of fuel and gas is down as is the price of scrap and new metals.

That's making the assumption that you (we) will not be one of the people making up that "more than 10%" unemployment statistic.

Low prices are only good for people who can take advantage of them.

That's the point lucznik.  Fewer people will be buying and that will bring prices down.  I hope you and I are among those able to do so.  Everybody will not be unemployed but more unfortunate folk are joining those ranks.

Lower sales may in this day of greed lead to higher prices. Due to the control of the bean counters needs to meet profit quotas. Todays world is not true capitalism. It is sourly contaminated with corporate greed. Then when the companies start to get too top heavy financially, they get a bailout from the Democratic congress.$$$$

That's possible if the ammo manufacturers anticipated the slow-down.  Who knows?  Time will tell.  But as the news headlines continue to report rising unemployment to probable historic levels many shooters/hunters just won't buy anything (or cut way back) out of caution, whether or not they've lost a job.  That kind of drop in demand should bring down prices.

I wonder if I can get the Treasury/Fed to bail out my ammo budget seeing as how as a taxpayer I'm bailing out everybody else?  It seems only fair.

Kinda crazy to think all this Bail out money coudl pay off everyone's mortgage in America.  Man just think if everyone would go out and spend what they would pay on Mortgage  on everyday things and MORE ammo if they didn't have a Mortgage LOL.  That would sure boost the Economy

I sure am glad that I started reloading - I would hate to know that I had to pay what people are paying for factory ammo.  It would definitely affect some of my "plinking" sessions. Two Guns

I'll be interested to see if prices ever go down at the grocery store! There may be some lag time but so far only gas is cheaper. As for ammo or reloading components who knows? If the vendor that was mentioned is who I think it is, well I've learned to shop around. Last year they had Lapua .308 brass (100) for $67 while another vendor had it for $47. Right now, they're actually selling it for $61 on sale (or you can buy 500 for $66 a box if you don't do the math).

im sure things will level out, if the price of gas doesnt go back up! scrap metal is down so i expect the prices of ammo to drop too.
