I'm trying to install a Vortex Viper 3-9x40 on a Savage 16 Weather Warrior (short action) and having a bit of difficulty. The rifle came to me with Burris dual dovetail bases already installed so I picked up some Signature rings, however the Viper with 5.4" of mounting length is just a tad too short. My local shop is trying to talk me into Leupold bases and rings, which would work with the rear base reversed (the windage end hangs over the bolt)  Just cosmetic, but it bothers me.  ;)

Would the Talleys with rings inward towards the bolt opening work for me?  I have no experience with Talleys, but it seems like the ring is centered over one of the mounting holes which in theory should shorten my mounting length.  Any help/advice is appreciated.

I have savage models 10,11,110,112, and they all have problems when mounting a scope. The space on the scope is just to small for good eye relief . I have been using the Burris 2 piece revesable bases and still need to file them down a little for proper fit. I just ordered a EGW rail and am going to give it a try, seems like a lot of guys who have tried them like them a lot better than weaver style bases. Go to EGW's web site to see them.

Upon further review the 3-9x40 Viper was just too short (5.4" mounting length) for me to feel comfortable with mounting it on my Savage 16 270WSM. Too many unknowns with reversing bases, ring widths, etc. Great glass, tube too short for Savage short action.

I believe I am going with the Viper 4-12x40, which has a pretty long tube (6.5" of mount length).

I have 2 Savage model 11's and didn't have any issues mounting scopes.  I use weaver/warne bases with Warne rings.  Bushnell 3-9X40 and Vortex 4-12X40.
