I have a marlin 60 semi .22 and me and my wife go shooting at the range every weekend. We usually shoot a box of 333 winchester rounds. After every trip to the range i completely disassemble the rifle and clean it with CLP, I clean the barrel with a boresnake everytime also. Am i over doing it or is this a good practice that i should keep up?

I probably over clean my .22. Typically, you should clean the bore when accuracy starts to drop off.

The lead actually "lubes" the barrel.

I just did some research on that. In rimfire rifles lead actually does act as a lubricant and can prevent rust. Thanks for bringing this to my attention!

I own a Mod 60 Marlin .22 LR too and it's a great little gun.

lead bullets in 22lr lube the barrel in the same way as cast lubrized bullets do when shooting cast lead bullets, its the wax. Some manufacturers of all lead pistol bullets use different formulas, however, I think Hornady uses a moly powder. Some barrel makers like Volquartsen recommend little or no cleaning. Most 22 barrels are softer steel than rifle barrels especially marlin so cleaning rods or wire brushes can make more trouble than solve. Just clean the action, brushing lightly around the chamber mouth and forget the barrel.

Thanks for all the info guys. Im a clean freak when it comes to all my rifles mainly because i want them to all be passed down to my kids one day. I never did like ramming a wire bush down the barrel of any rifle. When i was at basic training for the army thats how they wanted us to clean our weapons.  I never did but all my battle buddys sure did. I knew a guy that would run a wire brush thru his barell 20 times after everytime we got back from shooting and he wondered why he couldnt shoot worth a crap when it came to qualifications. I had one of the best qualification scores and i think that had a lot to do with it. Theres a big difference between an M16 and a .22 lol thats why i thought id ask. Thanks for the help! Ive learned alot from this Forum since i joined and i plan on staying with you guys for a while.
