Good morning guys,

At the BHM gun show yesterday I did a bit of horse trading. I bought this Savage 223 12CAL rifle for $350 from a guy there and traded one of my shotcams for this new Osprey 6x24 & rings scope. The scope is nice and clear and seems to be built well. What are your opinions?

Well, the rifle is cool--- and reasonable.  Don't know about the scope.   I'll have to look it up on the Internet.

If you're happy with what ya got for what ya gave, it's a good deal. It's a nice looking rig and ought to be a shooter. Thunbs Up

Don't know about the scope, the jury's still out. Worked the rifle over a bit and it cleaned out real nicely. Had to cold blue a couple of spots on the barrel and Van's didn't do it but Birtchwood Casey sure did. Good ol' bluing cream.

Congrats, I was at the Birmingham show yesterday also, and didn't see anything interesting whatsoever, except a few good-lookin ladies.

Yep, it was slim pickings but I did well I guess.....if she ends up shooting straight next weekend. Next couple of weekends will be devoted to taking a deer or two but I plan to zero this 223 Savage in between.

Ted, I used Birtchwood Casey to reblue the barrel and it turned out perfect. $8/tube and it does the trick each and every time.

Savage rifles are known for good to great accuracy. Good shooting and thanks for sharing with The Hive.

I use Brownell's DICROPAN  T 4  cream.  Degrease spot,  dab the goop on for 30 seconds,  wipe off, and seconds later it's black again.  Do it again if it ain't dark enough.

So far I like the scope. The glass is Hoya/Japanese, W/E turrets are 1/8" adjustable and are very audible but I'm still debating on its filed of view, it seems a bit narrow to my eyes. It also has mildots and range finding capability eched into the glass, with red/green illuminated reticle. It also came with lifetime warranty so all in all it's a good product but I still prefer my VV 6x24.

On another pleasent note, Alabama is covered in snow, close to 8", so it'll be a play day for us all, right Dan? Wish I was at my porperty hunting!

You guys in the northern half are lucky ( I know some of you don't see it that way ) for the snow.
I got home yesterday from Birmingham hoping to see some here. My heart aches for my kids to get to enjoy it, seems it's never on a long weekend so we could travel to get to it.
I'm 45 and only seen snow accumulate for a day maybe 4 times.

By the way, what was with the huge crowd on Saturday ? I've been to the BHM show on many occasions, but have never seen so many people. As luck would have it, I had 3 guns with me for sale, but no takers. Everyone there seemed to want stuff to be given to them.

Huntmaster, it's probably the tough economic times that make the gun buyer reluctant to purchase at close to retail. That and the unwarranted high cost some of the popular brands seem to expect. I don't want to mention specific brands but one such 45AC pistol that was built in Croatia, and sold in the high 200s originally was purchased by an American manufacturer and its price jumped up by $600, overnight it seems, with no change in the product mind you, and not that it needed it as its a darn good pistol! An astute business person in this industry commented about it"....this is still a $200 pistol with 2 $400 bills wrapped around it....."

OK guys, today I had a bit of time to compare between the scopes I own. The Osprey is a solid scope, with nice and clear, etched glass, but the Vortex Viper 6.5x24 seems to be a bit brighter after all. In every other aspect the Osprey holds its own so I'm happy I swapped for this one.
