I have a browining a-bolt with a 1994 leupold vx II on it. The scope has served me well. My question is how does that leupold compare with the newer models of leupold? How would my scope compare with a nikon prostaff or bushnell 3200 elite? Should I let the scope go with my gun for the rifle with the nikon prostaff? or should I look at trading guns and keeping my scope? Any advice you could give would be appreciated. Thanks!

I like the older leupold scopes, I'm guessing everything is still working properly on it?  I would personally use the leupold over a prostaff.  Between the bushnell and the leupold they are probably close to the same.
I'm not sure what you're referencing though for a trade?  Or are you selling the rifle and debating keeping the scope?  Some more detail would be nice.

I would probably rank those scopes you mentioned starting with the best and to my last choice.

1. Leupold VXII

2. Bushnell Elite

3. Nikon prostaff

I don't know if this helps you or not?

If its 1994 it is probably a vari-x II.  Does it have friction adjustments?  If it is, I had one that served me faithfully, but optically I would say it was pretty poor.  Even some low end modern scopes will be better optically.  The 3200 and Prostaff are both better, IMO.

One of the discounted Vortex Viper 2-7X32s would kick its butt up and down the street.

No way I'd trade that scope straight up for a Prostaff. That being said, optically I think the Prostaff is superior. Being made in 94 it's a Vari-X II as stated, not a VX-II. The VX-II has better glass. I've had a Vari-X II and a Prostaff and I felt the Prostaff had a slight edge optically, but it really wasn't much of a difference at all. It was very hard to tell, but in low light it seemed like the Prostaff was a bit better. I don't think you will be able to tell much of a difference though unless comparing them side by side.

However, that being said, the Leupold scopes while not optically the best are worth a lot more than a Nikon Prostaff. You could probably sell that scope for at least $220 or so if not more. I'm not familiar with what the 3-9x50's go for, but the 3-9x40's go for about $190-200 and I know the 50mm is a more expensive scope.

While you can buy a Nikon Prostaff 3-9x40 for $99. The Leupolds are just worth a lot more than the Nikon Prostaff's, so you could sell it, buy a Prostaff and have a bit left over.

I've got one a Leupold 3-9x50 on a Model 70 Classic in 7mm  from the mid 90's that's been all over with me on some great hunts. Some of the newer scopes have better glass but not better memoriesBig Smile I remember when my son was only ten years old I took him to the Daniels Ranch in Del Rio TX. I had that rifle and bagged a good buck and a doe and my son shot an Armadillo with his youth model Savage 22 single shot, good memories, think I'll keep the 70 with Leupold and his Savage.

  First off WELCOME to OT.

Myself?  I wouldn't let the Leupold go with the rifle. I'd trade the rifle w/o the Leupold for the rifle your looking at.  Sell your Leupold and use the $$$ to upgrade to one of the newer technology scope's like a 3-9x40 Conquest.  You'll APPRECIATE it.
