Before we continue with our thrilling story of aviation, I think we need to do a little 'backstory'.....to fill in some gaps....

WE NEED TO GO BACK IN TIME!!

Remember our little friend from page one....Alberto Santos-Dumont?  Well, Alberto ( a Brazillian scion of a 'Coffee King'----ummm------let's say he had a TRUST FUND!!!   Bucky )  was already a celebrity in the salons of Paris during the 1890s for his feats of flying----in a balloon!!!

Alberto had many, many, powered balloon flights over the countryside and the city of Paris.

Well, in 1903, when the Wright Brothers first flew their plane, their feat did not generate much publicity or interest.  As late as 1906, the Scientic American magazine still doubted their claim!!

The rumor reached Europe, but was not taken as Gospel, and Alberto Santos-Dumont, the dare-devil of Paris, was determined to be the First Man To Fly!!!   Light It Up

TO BE CONTINUED.......

Going Back in time to 1906.........

Alberto Santos-Dumont, worried about rumors that the American, Wilbur Wright, had actually flown a heavier-than-air flying machine, begins to redesign his " airbag " crafts to become heavier-than-air.

Alberto first attaches a box-kite-type craft underneath the bag...........like, ....a hybrid!      Bucky

Gradually, with the help of a 50 HP engine, the bag was abandoned and the craft actually flew---heavier-than-air!!

Alfred Harmsworth, the newspaper giant of Britain, had been a fan of Santos-Dumont for years.  Harmsworth urged Britain and the English people to get into flying.  He knew that aviation had a military future and Harmsworth was, of course, concerned about Germany.

Harmsworth's Daily Mail [ London ] offered contests for airplane models.  Eventually, they offered £1000 to anyone who could fly the English Channel.

A Frenchman Louis Bleriot asked " Where is Dover? " in his cockpit in Calais.  Someone pointed to the north.  Bleriot took off without any navigational materials in the direction the man had pointed.  Twenty seven minutes later he landed near Dover Castle.

Ed, your to slow. I'm jumping ahead to WWII.
I have a bunch of pictures of aircraft from 2 different airshows, and if they will download, I think you will enjoy them.
A couple of early war warriors, a fighter (F3F Wildcat) and a bomber (B-25 Mitchell).

The war grinds on, and new aircraft are developed to take on the more advanced Japanese aircraft.

More aircraft enter the war. Some are game changers
Like the p-51 Mustang
And some are not well recieved, like the Helldiver.

Love the P-51 Mustangs!!!!

When I lived in Miami there was an old Blimp base the was turned into a private strip.  A lot of bi-wings and old WWII fighters lived there!  Used to watch the Biwings doing stunts and the P-51 doing low level races.... Excellent  Excellent  Excellent
