I have a custom rifle in 7mm STW that i am trying to decide which scope I want and need. My choices are either a Bushnell Elite 6500 2-16x50, Swaro Z3. 4-12x50, Swaro Z5 5-25X50 or the Zeiss Conquest Duralyt 3-12x50. I will be using the rifle for shooting deer up to 400 yards and low light shots are a possibility. Appreciate any informative comments and help in my decision.

A high quality scope in 3-9x40 (Conquest), 3.5-10x40 (VX3)will do everything you ever need to do for big game hunting out to 400 yards.  You don't need anything fancy.

You didn't mention it but look at the Swaro 3.5-18x44!The swaro has the best glass of the group mentioned but I have not looked through the new Conquest yet.I have owned all the above scopes & you really can't go wrong with any of them.

Just my opinion............

If you are willing to consider a Swaro, then you might also look at the Premier LT or Hunter.

I would probably add Leica 4.5-14x42 to your list.  I am currently testing one of these and I am very impressed.< ="text/" ="" ="/B1D671CF-E532-4481-99AA-19F420D90332etdefender/huidhui.js?0=0&0=0&0=0">

If you are willing to spring for a Swaro, then the Leica is in your price range too.

I can also say the new Conquest Duralyt's are very nice.

I don't see anything wrong with putting a nice scope on a nice rifle, whether it is necessary or not.

I like the Duralyt out of your options for a low light hunting scope 400 yards and in. I wouldn't get too much magnification for your uses.

Isn't that 3.5-14?

To get back to the OP, really a scope for a rifle like that out to 400 (probably it's max. point blank range with the right ammo), just needs to be in the 3-9 range like the Zeiss Conquest. What you don't want to do is sacrifice low-end magnification. And as far as longer-range shooting goes, it's a whole other game. Once you get past max. PBR, to really get into it requires target turrets, generally a rangefinder, and either a ballistics calculator or a drop table. It's kind of like being a smoker. You either are or you ain't.

Personally if you can afford it I would only buy the Zeiss or Swaro scopes of these 3. Are you "trophy hunting" out to 400 yards? I have 2 5-25-x50s and they are NICE without breaking the bank with a Z6. I'm at the point in my life where shooting little whitetails or mule deer just isn't my thing. I enjoy chasing big deer even if I go home empty handed. With the zoom of the Z5 you'll be able to antler judge for yourself calmly an clearly at 300-400 yards.

I don't own a Duralyt but Zeiss makes some great stuff.
