Subject: .220 Swift Ruger 77 scope
Date Posted: April/15/2014 at 14:35
Gents,
I stumbled across the holy grail of a cache of brand new, Ruger 77's (Tang Safety, some flat bolts), NIB.
The place has SEVERAL brand new .220 swifts, heavy contour, Douglas barreled 77's. Of course I had to have one of those (and a new 250 Savage, too). The entire bunch were purchased in Spring of 1970 new by the shop.
Question: I have no idea what to put on it...so can someone help make a suggestion? I will shoot groundhogs as far away as I can. I'd really like to see what my limits are with the rifle and the right optic will help me do that, hopefully.
I'm not a gazillionaire, but I feel this piece of artwork deserves a beautiful scope on top.
Suggestions welcome and desired.
I'm a newbie here. Thanks a million.

Welcome to OT, Chief!
Nice score!!!
How much do you have budgeted for the scope?

Ted,
Thanks for responding!!
I want to stay under $1000.00, but can bend some. The rifle has medium rings which can handle up to a 42mm objective, but I have no issue getting new rings from Ruger.
Heck, my other 77's all have Burris optics on them and the last one to get a scope was a 77/44 that I bought the year they came out. Back then, Burris sold rings for 77's. I think I'm stuck going to Ruger for rings cuz I cant see anyone out there that makes them.
Thanks again!

Warne makes some as well. http://swfa.com/Ruger-C2383.aspx - http://swfa.com/Ruger-C2383.aspx http://swfa.com/Ruger-C2386.aspx - http://swfa.com/Ruger-C2386.aspx
Warne make 30mm as well. I really like Warne rings, excellent quality IMO.

ST,
Great to know about Warne. I read nothing but good about those rings. The Burris that are available are typically Nickel or LOW models.
That said, I should have looked harder for rings!
Thanks man!

IF 12 would be enough for your goals. Glass is suppose to be very good and very useful mag range although not sure you really need that low in on a varmint gun.

Its beautiful. Out of all the scopes Ive ever looked through, I have yet to handle a Swarovski Z3. Is the glass that much better than most everything else? I have also thought about the Zeiss HD5 5x25.
I own a Weaver V16 on a Browning Abolt2 composite stalker in 25-06. I never thought that a Weaver could be so good for the money. It led me to think about a Weaver Super Slam.
I do love Burris scopes too. The last one I bout was in the late 90's for my 77/44. If I remember right, they are now made in China. I think they used to make their scopes here. Not even sure if it matters. Hell, we probably make our own fighter jets in China now (or a big piece of them). SO I'd like an opinion on a Burris long range scope.
I have never handled a Vortex or SS, but I read about them on this board (which I have lurked on for years). It seems that at least SOME consideration should be given.
I realize that in that 1000-1250 price range I have TOO many good scopes to choose from. Hopefully I can figure it out in the next week or so.

Need to get your requirements down....
Do you want target style turrets?
Illumination?
Minium Power?
Max Power?
This stuff will help you narrow it down to a smaller field of choices. Like you said, with your budget, lots of contenders, just got to figure out what features you want most.

Since you said you wanted to air it out a bit, I'd get a scope with good turrets for dialing your drop dope, coupled with a good reticle that allows holdover and wind adjustment.
Within your budget, I'd seriously consider one of these SS scopes. The Mil Quad reticle is excellent for small varmints at long range. They represent the best optical and mechanical performance you can get in scopes costing less than $1K, especially at the current sale prices, (ending after today)...

I'd like positive click, return to zero, turrets.
Min power is 4. Max is 25.
Illumination is cool, but not necessary unless it's just a ring or center dot. I just haven't grown accustomed to IR's yet.

If this was the 1960s I would say get a Weaver 6X. But, since it's a New World, I'd say get a new-fangled variable....like 6-20X.

I like the way you think and I'm seriously drooling over the SS 5-25 variable. Looks like I have about 4 hrs to decide.
What a beauty.

Welcome to OT, Chief. My 2 cents; SS 3-15x42, spend the rest on good rings and ammo. (And if your rifle is like all the 77's I've owned, might get a trigger. But then, I'm a "good trigger" kind of guy). And congrats on your find!!

Think Son of Ed was suggesting the Weaver Super Slam 5-20x50 scope. Have a couple of them and one of their 3-15x42 super slams. They are nice scopes. Optics in them are pretty good. Last Monday at range, had opportunity to sit down behind a Swarvorski and a Zeiss Darvari and then return to one of my Weaver SS scopes. Chuckle, yea the Swarvorsk and the older Zeiss had better optics, but in my humble opinion the optics in my Weaver still looked pretty darn good to me. As to reliability and feel of turret adjustments and etc., mine are quite good.
Only negative thing I can think of is the weight of the 5-20x50 SS.....not a scope you'd want on a light weight carry rifle.
