Subject: Photo Contest #13 (March, 2015) -- GUNS
Date Posted: March/06/2015 at 13:53
OK, I decided to make this one easier to try to encourage more participation.

The March, 2015 photo contest theme is "GUNS."

Post any photo with a firearm, multiple firearms, or shooting firearms as the subject or part of the subject of the photo. As long as it meets that simple criteria, pretty much anything goes.

Please keep in mind both when posting and voting on a photo that THE OBJECT OF THE CONTEST IS NOT WHO HAS THE COOLEST OR NICEST GUN(S), BUT INSTEAD, WHO CAN COMPOSE THE BEST PHOTO WITH SOMETHING RELATED TO GUN(S) AS THE SUBJECT. This is a photo contest, not a "best gun" contest. That being said, by all means, good gun porn is highly encouraged; just make sure composing a great photo is the main goal, not showing off your toys.

Remember to read the Photo Contest Rules:
http://www.opticstalk.com/photo-contest-rules_topic39547.html - http://www.opticstalk.com/photo-contest-rules_topic39547.html

Specifically, the photo must be taken by you and must be taken sometime during the month of March, 2015.

Add in something from SWFA and it could also be entered in the SWFA contest as well.

Oldie, but a goodie.

This was my grandfather's Ithaca Mod. 37 20 gauge Pump Action Shotgun.
My dad taught me how to shoot clays with it growing up and then when I was able to purchase my own, well...I bought a Remington. but this was one of my favorites.

Thanks! That's the Galco braided "Cobra" sling I recommended when you were asking for sling suggestions for your Champlin.

Yes, Sky, it's a Dakota Model 10 in .260.

That is the sling I got for my Winchester 1885 when I was looking at it for the Champlin.  Just did not seem to go with the Champlin as well.

It looks great on the Dakota...

I also love those Dakota 10's. Unfortunately, they are out of my comfort zone price-wise. Guess I'm relegated to #1's and 1885's. LOL. Great pics so far.

There is one story that landed my Grandpa in the papers. He and a friend were out duck hunting on the Arkansas River in Ozark Arkansas and while in a boat early one morning waiting on the birds to fly in, they preparing.

Later that morning as the ducks and geese made their decent from all directions, my grandpa pulled up to shoot and then his buddy did the same, however in this case, barrels were crossed and his friend shot and hit the side of the barrel. Now there small dent in the side of the barrel from that successful cold foggy morning in Arkansas while two men were duck hunting.

I can't tell you why, but that is a story that I heard from my step-dad and aunt made the local news. They both have explained to me, that this story was shar3ed in the Ozark Spectator. I guess they possibly have a hunting or sports column where stories are shared with others in the community, but that was a different era in time. Some of you guys remember the big steel American classics that used to be on the road and being able to leave your keys in the car, back when you didn't have to worry about laying in bed recalling whether you locked your front door or not...a simpler time.

When Ted started the new contest, this is exactly what I wanted to use as my subject. I toyed with another idea, but I felt that reflecting on times past made a much better subject matter.

I hope you guys like it as much as I enjoyed it.

It's an MP44 built by Hanel or however you spell it according to the manufacturer code, who made more of the assault rifles than any other of the makers. There were about 6 if I remember correctly. The caliber is 8mm Kurtz, which is the 7.92x57 Mauser shortened to 7.92x33 with a 123gr boat tailed bullet. It is a true select fire assault rifle with a rate of fire of 450rpm, and feeds from a 30rd detachable box magazine. It is one of the most controllable shoulder fired full autos I have ever shot IF you shoot it like a shotgun (elbows high). It has a 16" barrel and a muzzle velocity of about 2300-2400fps.
In the photo you will notice ammo in stripper clips, and a stripper clip guide and stripper clip attached to a magazine; they are all original and not some reproduction or 8mm Mauser stripper clips. Everything else in the photo is reproduction except for the bayonet, scabbard, canteen, bread bag, and helmet. Oh, the magazines are also original and come from various manufacturers. They sell for about $400-$450 right now, and there are 7 in the photo.
The MP/Stg 43 and 44 rifles are interesting to study because there are so many different variations and manufacturers over the entire life of the series to keep you confused for a life time.

Good info, Lynn!

All you guys need to keep participating in the photo contest every month. We've had pretty sparse participation most months. You did a good job, and you might just find that you enjoy the challenge, and learn more about your camera and photography in the process. Having to work within a 1 month time frame to come up with a photo that meets the theme makes you think and plan, and that can force you to go on an adventure somewhere to find a subject. Think of it as kinda like a digital scavenger hunt where you learn new things in the process!

He's right.

I have gotten to a point where I keep my camera with me just about everywhere I go now because you never know what you will run into while out and about.

I can't wait for the new ideas for April. In Texas we are beginning to get BlueBonnet's popping up and the bugs are coming out in force. Would make for a cool theme " BOKEH "

You don't need a fancy camera.

It's the Indian that counts, not the bow.

Good photography is more about good composition, finding a good subject, and managing available light well than the gear you took the photo with. A good camera certainly helps with image quality, but a good photographer can take nice photos with pretty much anything.

That's not true.

Case in point, when Ted and I went fishing out of Freeport, guess what I left in Brenham?
My wallet and my camera! DOH!

However I did have my cellphone and that is what I shot in SEMO Shooter's theme " http://www.opticstalk.com/contest-4-water_topic40046_post572865.html#572865 - OT Contest #4 : "Water" " Thread.

Now granted a actual camera will be an advantage, but with several cellphone manufacturer's updating their tech, you can get some really cool photos from a camera phone now days.

Which reminds me, the other benefit to participating in the photo contests is we learn from each other when folks try different techniques, lighting, composition, etc.

Since there are no fancy prizes, it's all about having fun.
