That's right sports fans.....The OT College Football Thread is LIVE!

I won't be around as much as I'd like for a bit, but you all can start talking up your favorite teams or talking smack about the other guys teams.

Gotta start out talking to about a guy who I think will have a stellar season this year and that's LSU RB Leonard Fournette. This guy has the potential to be a VERY special player.

6' 1" and 225. Dude runs a 4.35 40. He can run through, over, or around defenders with equal ease. He's a monster!

Let's get ready to ruuuummmmble.....

Tarheels and the "Lamecocks" in Charlotte tonite!

Gators going with QB Treon Harris against New Mexico State Saturday. I'm guessing that local phenom Will Grier will replace him by the time they play the vols.

Speaking of UT, I'm getting REALLY tired of all the smack coming out of Knoxvegas about how this is their year to beat Florida. Well, I heard the same thing last year...(and the year before...the year before...and the year before)....yet victory against Florida has eluded Big Orange since 2004.

I personally think Butch Jones is a good guy and the team has bought into to his plan, but you still have to go to The Swamp to beat The Gators, who just so happen to have a VERY formidable defense again this year, especially the defensive backs.

Boom!  My buddy took the bet and 13 points. He wanted 19, but I figured 13 based on the 17.5 line is pretty good.

What's on the line is:

1) a case of benton lane pinot noir to the winner, and...
2) If I win, he will throw in a set of hand painted (by his lovely wife) wine glasses; or
3) If he wins, I will throw in a drybox of 5.56 rounds.  Should be a good game.

GO FROGS!!!!!!

Good day. Saw a lot of teams play some and my beloved Gators play the entire game. Nice to see the Florida offense clicking, even if it was against lowly New Mexico State, but thee seems to be a different vibe this year, compared to the last few.

But...even today the media is reporting there's still a "QB conundrum" at Florida between last years starter, Treon Harris and red shirt Freshman phenom Will Grier. Really??? Loco

I think both QB's played a pretty good game, and in fairness, I can certainly see where yanking a guy out and putting him back in later like the coaching staff did with the two can be hard on a QB finding his groove, but the more the game went on, the more Mr. Grier separated himself from Mr. Harris. Clearly.....
Grier has a lightening quick release, great accuracy and was able to go through his progressions and read defenses, where Harris seemingly held on to the ball a bit too long and had trouble finding open receivers. Harris didn't have a bad game really, actually pretty good "statistically", it just seemed the game came easier to Will Grier.
Grier did have a fumble for a loss and put the defense, which played great, in a bad position though. Don't get me wrong, I like Harris a lot. I think he's a great kid and super athlete, but Grier is The Man moving forward. The media can keep stirring the pot of conundrum all they want....

Shout out to Texas A&M yesterday and they rolled over Zona State. "The Chief" has the talented defense playing lights out. MUCHO improved from last years squad that frankly looked confused and out of position last year. The little I saw of that game, showed the defense SWARMING to the Sun Devil ball carrier on nearly every play.
Myles Garret maybe the best defensive player in the country this year. He and Hall on the other end are gonna make a lot of offenses MISERABLE this year. They are absolute monsters and there isn't a better DE tandem in the country now.

Running game got going better than last year from what I witnessed too.
Carson looked good, from what I saw.

SEC held their own yesterday. (And Thursday when the Lamecocks BARELY beat NC.) The Game Cocks have issues this year on both sides of the ball.

Hopefully the Gators will continue to improve. Their much "discussed" O-Line actually played pretty well for youngsters. The "D" woke up in the second half. Might end up being a decent year after all. There is a different "air" about the team with the Chimp gone. More gooder! Excellent

Yes, Ric. The young O line played pretty well....against New Mexico State's defense. That position will be our Achilles heel this year I fear.

Agree the defense looked better in second half too. I think they brought more pressure on the NMSU quarter back in the second half.
Good to see LB Antonio Morrison back out there. Great story. Line backers are lacking this year. DB's are maybe the best Florida has ever had and that's saying a lot. Defensive lineman Cece Jefferson is gonna be a STAR....make that...super nova for Florida too.

Bama looked very "Bama-ish" against a good Wisconsin team. I think it's safe to say they'll continue to be a force to reckon with in the SEC West. No matter how many key players graduate/leave for NFL, they just seem to keep on keepin on with an endless supply of talent, without missing a beat!

Dammit!

I was at the A&M - Zona State game last night. Great game! I was expecting a shoot out between two explosive offenses, but instead was pleasantly surprised to see a hard fought defensive battle. Chief has our guys salty this year, and the D line especially played well, with 9 sacks and 14 TFLs.

Keep an eye on freshman phenom Christian Kirk (WR), because that's a name you're gonna hear a lot more of. The kid is the real deal! Here he is showing his speed on a punt return TD.

https://www.clippituser.tv/c/pdlgk - https://www.clippituser.tv/c/pdlgk

He also had a dazzling TD reception off a bubble screen from midfield that was as impressive, maybe more so, but I couldn't find a link to the highlight.

Keep in mind, he's a true freshman!

Well, THE Ohio State looks like they are picking up where they left off. I went to bed earl, but they seemed to be driving most of the game, even missing some of their guys. "12 Gauge" is a hoss.

And unfortunately, it appears they have a pretty easy schedule the rest of the season, so barring a major upset, I see them coasting to the playoffs again... unless the playoff committee penalizes them for soft SOS...but I don't see that happening, as they are the sports media darlings at the moment.

Man, really weird weekend in CFB, with a couple P5 ranked teams either getting a scare and/or beaten by FCS teams!

I can't believe Arky got beat by Toledo! Toledo?!!! AU dodged a bullet against Jacksonville State and needed OT to finally pull out the win, and they had to come from behind to put the game into OT to begin with! Missouri struggled to beat Arkansas State.

Weird weekend.

Still, as previous years have demonstrated it's hard to tell much about any team this early in the season, and the preseason rankings are usually bogus for the most part.

Agreed! Man, I was a Jax St. fan Saturday! But in the closing minutes they decided to play not to lose instead of playing to win and it bite them in the butt.

Might want to use a 2 QB attack against the Volunteer "D" that is quite good this year. Tempo, keep them guessing....TRY to make up for that Florida "O" line that is gonna have a LONG day against Tenn's front 7.

Ole Miss is a very good team, no doubt. I'm still not convinced they're a better team top to bottom than Bama, despite Saturday's results. It's just damn difficult for any team to overcome 5 turnovers against a quality opponent.I take nothing away from Miss; turnovers are part of the game, and they made the most of Bama's mistakes, legitimately beating Bama in Tuscaloosa. But, I still believe Bama has more talent overall, and I believe they can bounce back from this and still be a legit playoff contender, as previous years have demonstrated.

LSU's Fournette is a once in a decade, special player. The dude is frightening! If LSU had a potent passing attack to complement him, their offense would be damn near unstoppable.

I disagree about Bammers. I'm not sold on Coker. Secondary is highly suspect. The loss of Amari Cooper is showing. No big name stars that Bama typically has on the roster. Henry ain't bad, but can't do it all.
All that, IMHO, and a stronger than usual SEC West...

Bama ain't done losing. This could easily be a 3 loss season for The Tide. (Sorry, Mike.)

Maybe so, but consider this...
Bama was down 30-10 near the end of the 3rd quarter. Yet, they still managed to score 27 points mostly in the 4th quarter to bring the score within 6. They were driving with a minute left in the game and might have scored again to take the lead had Coker not been intercepted.

Bama put 503 total yards on the Ole Miss D vs. 433 total yds for Ole Miss.

Bama 29 first downs vs. 16 for Miss.

TOP 35:26 for Bama vs. 24:34 for Miss.

3rd down efficiency was 55% for Bama (11 of 40), 29% (4 of 14) for Miss.

Rushing yards: 215 Bama, 92 Miss.

Both teams had the same pass completion %: 54%

Bama had better stats in every category, except the one that cost them the game: 5 turnovers (2 fumbles, 3 interceptions), giving Miss a short field to work from.

Again, not saying Miss didn't win legitimately, but Miss was very fortunate to get that last interception because Bama was more than capable of winning the game at the end and had plenty of time to do so, despite of 4 prior turnovers and a 20 point deficit. In short, few teams could overcome 5 turnovers and still threaten to beat Miss from a 3 score deficit, mostly all in 1 quarter of play. That's impressive. Given the stats above, do you believe the result would have been the same had Bama done a better job of ball security?

I do think Chad Kelly is a better QB than Jake Coker at this point, but I personally think Bama has as good or better talent everywhere else, along with a better coach.

BTW, the NCAA is in Oxford, MS right now as we speak, investigating Ole Miss for possible recruiting violations. Who knows whether they'll uncover anything, but one has to wonder how they were able to land so many 5 star players in 2015. Somehow, they were able to lure a bunch of blue chip players, who had offers from everyone, to a school in Mississippi who hasn't won a championship title of any kind since the early 1960's, when they hadn't been able to get these players in the past. Not just regional players, mind you, but from all over the country. Either Ole Miss coeds are smoking hot, or Hugh Freeze is one helluva recruiter to sell Ole Miss over Bama, LSU, and Auburn... or something really fishy is going on.

As I stated, "maybe not defensively".
That's TWO straight years The Sip has beaten Saban. If Bammers couldn't get cranked up for that "revenge game", then I have to wonder how good Bama is this year.

Ya know I ain't hating. If Bama was in the SEC East, they'd have it wrapped up. I'm not saying they're not "good", just not "Bama good".
At Jawja, at College Station, home with LSU....dare I say Big Orange?? are going come gunning for them.
At Sippy State and at Auburn. That's a dangerous schedule for anybody.
I loved Bama against Wisconsin this year, but they just don't seem right. Easily a 3 loss season for Saban potentially.

That Ohio State game last year made them seem vulnerable to me.

Oh, I wouldn't at all be shocked to see them drop 3.

Then again, I also wouldn't be shocked to see them run the table. I will never count out a Nick Satan coached team no matter who they do or don't have. They consistently have an endless supply of blue chip players waiting in the wings.

That's the interesting thing about the SEC and the toll it takes on even its best teams any given year due to the gauntlet they have to endure. Anything can happen.

I didn't think Sip and Sip State would fall apart at the end of last year the way they did.

I also didn't think "the" Ohio State would beat either Bama or Oregon last year, I didn't think Notre Dame would beat LSU, and I damn sure didn't think TCU would beat Ole Miss, much less give them the complete beatdown they did. The past couple years especially have been weird and have proven conclusively that my college football predictions haven't been worth spit, so I've given up on making them and just sit back and enjoy the ride.Big Grin

Mark, no offense taken! I'm hopeful of this years team. As Ted pointed out, they did well in the stats but fumblitus is not a typical ailment at Bama. Fundamentals have never been a problem like it was in sip game. Dropped passes, missed assignments, just sloppy play that isn't normal to Saban coached team. Could they run the table? Yes, could they get beat again absolutely! What I will say is this, had that team come back an beat Ol' Miss that would have been a game for the history books of Bama football. IMHO

They showed the character of a championship team, they never rolled over. That's something Saban will build on!

I tell ya, I'm always a'feared of Bama. I freakin hate LSU and have ever since I was a student at A&M during the Southwest Conference days, when their fans vandalized buildings on campus with purple spray paint and so many of them acted like total asshats. But for some reason, I don't hate Bama despite the beatdown we received from them last year. They seem to be able to take good-natured ribbing and normal homerism from opposing fans better than some other fan bases I've seen. Perhaps lots of winning does that to them.

Don't get me wrong; I'll always hope we somehow manage to beat the hell out of Bama every time we play 'em, as any fan would. When I put down the Maroon Koolaid and look at them just from the perspective of a football fan, however, I respect them immensely and I'll always worry about our games with them. They've earned respect, not only recently, but throughout their history. There's a good reason why the Steely Dan song "Deacon Blues" contains the lyrics:

They got a name for the winners of the world
I want a name when I lose
They call Alabama the Crimson Tide
Call me Deacon Blues

Mike, I'm reading some interweb rumors about Lane Kiffin getting in another jam......Booster's wife or Saban's daughter?  Whatever

I was just saying the other day that maybe Kiffy has found a place where he belonged. A place where he could coach up QB's and run offense's...keep his yap shut, pants zipped and all would be well.
Maybe those nasty rumors in Knoxville were more true than rumor.

I can make that wish happen, and would be thrilled to do so, Mike! Any time you want to visit, let me know. Every fan base has its share of asshats, but I promise you, most Aggie fans will treat you with respect and friendliness...despite wishing ill will on your team.Big Grin

BTW, the proper terminology is "Midnight Yell Practice." It's a bit weird (o.k., a LOT weird) to outsiders, but hey, many college traditions are weird, and that just adds to the fun in my book. If you understand the colorful history behind some of the weirdness, it all makes more sense, and a lot of the origins of our traditions are kinda funny.

Reveille is our beloved mascot. Reveille VIII just retired last year, and Rev IX just started her career a couple months ago.

Miss Rev is not only our mascot; she's the "First Lady of Aggieland" and is also the highest ranking member of the Corps of Cadets.  She's the only animal besides service dogs allowed in any building on campus.

She wasn't always a collie. The first Rev was a stray dog that some Corps members accidentally hit with their car, and brought her back to campus to care for her. Here is Reveille I:

A&M was an all ROTC college until the 1960's. Reveille 1 got her name because she barked when the bugler played Reveille every morning. According to tradition, if Reveille decides to get on a cadet's bed, that cadet must then sleep on the floor. If Reveille barks during a class, that class must immediately be dismissed for the day.

More explained here:

Yep. I heard that Mcalister might be suspended too, which made me crazy. Tenn QB Dobbs is gonna go after Quincy Wilson with Tabor out.
Not feeling good about Saturday BEFORE this......

Indeed! What a crazy game, my friend. Tenn out played them at almost every turn only to lose, yet again.
That next to the last Vol possession was a 3 and out. Butch played a little to conservative in my mind. I thought so when it happened. Cost him BIG. That and not going for 2 points on the last score.

No kidding, Ric. I never dreamed that game would go like that. I thought a good day would be...Gators losing by....7. Wink

Florida at #11 in the country today, Sports Fans.

And in other news....The Volunteers keep losing. Boy, I'm not even kicking them now. Them and The Cocks are in disarray of Biblical proportions.

Whoever said Bammers was finished is an IDIOT!! Bucky
Epic BEAT DOWN in Athens yesterday. Mercy! Bama has another freshman WR named Ridley (sp) who's gonna be the next Julio Jones...Amari Cooper.....Kid has skills. Nice win, Mike!
