This was a stock .308 Ruger American:

I got a great deal on it, new.  However, the stock just did not "fit" me.  Everything about it felt wrong.  So I got the Boyd's Pro Varmint stock and purchased CDiPrecision Gunworks bottom metal.  CDi has an amazing deal... you purchase their bottom metal and they will inlet the stock for you... free. I tried to make them take money for the work they did and they would not... said "it's a part of our service".

And what service it is.  This is what I ended up with:

The workmanship is outstanding.  The new feel is exactly what I wanted and I still have less in this than if I had purchased a different rifle.  I can probably sell or trade the old stock... probably works for someone.

The scope is the SWFA SS10xHD... serial number 666.

It is about to get some work.

Very cool!

Do you send the entire rifle into them to get inletted, or just the stock?

Very nice KB!

How's the trigger? Does it have the Ruger Marksman Adjustable trigger?

What kind of mags does the CDI take?

I sent the barreled action, new stock and they had the bottom metal.

The trigger is the adjustable.

I had the choice of AICS or MDT... chose MDT because of other rifles that use them.

CDI bottom metal is good quality.  They inlet my and a buddies stocks about 4 years ago.  Good people.

I am as happy with this rifle as I could be.  The inletting job is as near perfect as I can envision.  Went to the range yesterday and I am thoroughly impressed.  I did not shoot at 1000.  Saving that for a better time.  I've been to this range at least a dozen times, just driving through looking.  Only once have I seen anyone on the 1000 yard range... until yesterday.  People shooting at various ranges... 200 yard line, 600 yard line, one guy went to the 800 yard line... however, each shorter line ties up all the longer lines.  I stayed on the steel range and shot out to 500.  Rifle consistently under 1MOA, generally under 1/2MOA.  Trigger is cleaning up with use, bolt is getting smoother and smoother, magazine action is clean.  Nothing about this rifle I don't like, now.  CDi is an outstanding company with outstanding people.

My highest rating.

Really liking the Ruger American with the Boyd's stock and CDI bottom metal… they did an outstanding job inletting it (which they do free if you purchase their bottom metal).  Just wow…
Went shooting at the Adair Range between Yuma and YPG on the 18th.  Last 8 rounds at 100 yards:

I can be happy with that.

I might just have to have the Predator in 6.5 in a Boyd's ATONE stock.

So besides the bottom metal, did you do anything else to the stock? It's basically a laminated stock right?

Thinking about getting one for my 700 AAC-SD and having pillars added and bedding it and dumping the Hogue.

Here is another Boyds sample on an American for you Lockjaw.  They are a decent stock IMO.  Heavy, but that is laminate.

Mine is not laminated, simple composite, black.  (To clarify... it is a composite of a wooden stock with a heavy rough black paint, completely sealed... black is the only color available, at least when I go this one, light and sturdy) I had the recoil lugs bedded.

The laminated stocks look very good to me, but there were none available for the Ruger American.

They actually make every style they have for the Americans.

That interesting since I bought mine several months before you did.  They have been available for quite some time as I debated for about a year before I finally gave in and bought one.  Whomever you spoke with must not have been very up to date on their products.

Got mine in January.  http://www.opticstalk.com/my-new-stock-gun-porn_topic43868.html - http://www.opticstalk.com/my-new-stock-gun-porn_topic43868.html

How much does that one weigh in the laminated stock?

I have an M77 Stainless 7mm-08 compact laminate and its 6 pounds withouth scope or sling.

I really just want to dump this Hogue. I don't even like shooting it off the bench.

With the scope and 7 rounds of ammo it weights exactly 10 lbs.  That scope weights 22 oz.  So you would be about 8.7ish without a scope.

A lot of people will drill a couple big holes in the butt stock under the recoil pad and then small holes under the barrel.  So you can shed a bit of weight if you are willing to drill it up a bit.

That one will weight a little more because of the adjustable cheek piece as well.  But it was a must for me as that is a 34mm tubed scope and I needed a lot of height.

My bdl 270 in a hogue with full alumimun bedding thing in it and scope weighs 9+.

My SPS 700 AAC-SD doesn't weigh that much. If it had the full bedding block like my 270 I could probably deal with it. I really just would like a stock that looks like a tranditional one, but fitted for the larger diameter barrel. I do not like a fat pistol grip, which is one of the things I don't like about the hogue.

So.... that may put me into a Magpul hunter stock. I looked at one, it was pretty light.

Spend a little extra and get a Manners or Mcmillan.  They are so much better than anything factory it is not even funny.  Worth every penny IMO.

At the time I needed it right away.  The lady said the pro varmint was the only one they had for the Ruger American, but had others that should be available soon.  I actually want a blue one...

I'm enjoying it, so far.  A little tame for my blood, but that 8 round group was about as fast as I could cycle the bolt, not quite, but nearly.  Now, if I could do 50 rounds inside 1MOA at 300 yards, I'd be impressed.  I don't think that skinny little barrel will stand up to it, though.  Overall, I'd buy it again.
I've been considering, when I burn this one out, getting a carbon fiber barrel for it.  I'd have to get the stock modified, though (I think).

I just discovered Stockys now has a couple American stocks that has an aluminum bedding V block in it.  It actually looks very nice.  It is a lot more money than a Boyds, but looks like another good option.

That is step compared to the same stock for a Remington 700.

I ended up getting a Boyds at one for my AAC. Can't wait for it to get here. I am gonna have it pillar and glass bedded.
