I'm a first time poster here, looking for some input on a decision I'm struggling with.
Rifle is a Ruger Hawkeye Predator in 6.5 creedmoor which I use at up to 800 yards (range max) and will take hunting this year. I own a Leica 2.5-10×42 with bdc turret already and have another on order along with a Leupold vx-5 2-10×42 with the zl2 or whatever they call it turret....one of these scopes will be sent back. I currently have a Leica er5 2-10 with plex reticle on the rifle, but want something I can dial for range. Otherwise I'm quite happy with the optical quality of the er5 scope, it's also a little oversized. I have owned, but recently sold a Leupold vx-3i, which is the extent of my real world experience with Leupold. The vx-3i was an ok scope, but even miku Leica er5 is significantly better to my eyes, which is how I ended up with an ER i.
I guess I'm just asking for input from anyone who's played with either/both of these scopes, epecially in regards to dialing, tracking, usability.
Oh... the Leica is roughly $600 more.

I have that Vx-5HD on my creed and I like mine a lot. I doubt the optics are quite as good as a Leica, but they are good and get me easy 30 min before and after sunrise/sunset. As far as dialing goes, mine has been excellent. I have dialed mine to 1200 yards and back and everywhere in between many times and it tracks true. I also have a vx-6 in a 300 wsm and it tracks true as well.
Mine has the firedot as well and I liked that for early morning use. Overall I am extremely satisfied with the scope. Add the alumina flip up scope caps and it is an excellent package.

If you can afford the ERi, stuck with that. VX-5 is a very nice scope for the money, but it is not a good as ERi.

Sorry to go off topic but how did you get your Leupold Alumina caps to stay in place? Mine loosen and start unscrewing under recoil

The scopes were delivered a couple of hours ago, playing with them in dirext sunlight right now.
I guess my main concern is tracking/mechanical reliability. I have dialled with the ERi that I have, but it's the first ballistic turret scope I've owned. I have not put it through any kind of tracking tests beyond ring gongs at the range, which it seems to dial accurately enough for.
I'll look through these at dusk, but that's 9:30 pm this time of year.

I've got a pair of the Leica ER scopes -- one with target turrets and one with capped turrets. I recommend you check to see how much elevation adjustment you have with the Leica you received and compare that to how much you need for the ranges you shoot. Running from memory, I believe the one I have with the target turret is limited to 23 MOA of adjustment, while the one with the capped turrets spins up to 32 MOA. I was able to fine tune the mounting of the scopes using Burris' Signature Zee rings in order to utilize nearly all the vertical adjustment available, but the amount of turret adjustment may be a limiting factor for you with the 6.5 CM. (If that's not a problem, I think the Leica is pretty hard to beat.)

The Leica ERi has adjustments in 0.1 mrads, with just over 9 mrads in one turn (it stops at that point). I believe 9 mrads is roughly equivalent to 31 moa...if my math is correct. At any rate, 9 mrads gets me past 1,000 yards quite easily with the 6.5 creedmoor.
The vx-5 has around 38 moa with it's turret, not sure what it's total internal adjustment is, but it's supposedly 18 mrads for the Leica.
Long story short, both have the internal elevation adjustment, as well as available turret rotations to do what I need, and to spare.
On the optics side, it's a hot and sunny day and I spent some time looking across a field, as well as at some signposts with both scopes. Mirage is a thing at 22 celcius, the colours are more vibrant with the Leica for sure, hard to determine much difference in resolution at range while freehanding a scope by resting my elbows.
Both resolve as steady as I can hold them, the sun seems to wash the vx-5 out a bit more, and I see more defined mirage with the ERi? Not sure why the mirage would pop more with one scope than the other when they are both set to 10×, but there you go. Maybe it's an artifact of the colours being a touch "deeper" through the Leica.

Not sure what to call it but they have a double adjustment nut thingy on them. Then there is that rubber oring that creates back pressure on then. I have then on 5 Leupolds and have not had any come loose on me.

I actually go a step further than this video. I put the hinge to the left of where I want it, then tighten the nut and then use the hinge as leverage to tighten it a bit more and then the hinge is where I want it. (hope that makes sense). I have some on a 45-70 and 300 WSM that are pretty good in the recoil dept and have not noticed them being loose.

Interesting, my ER 3.5-14 x 42 IBS reticle is 1/4 moa with the exposed turret. I like the glass a lot. The resolution is very good. But I really like the contrast because game stands out nicely in cover.

Yeah, it was tough to figure out what Leica was doing with their turrets -- very inconsistent. The ER scopes were MOA based and topped out at around 32 MOA of adjustment with capped turrets and 23 MOA with target turrets. On the ERi 2.5-10 scopes, you end up with MIL turrets, and the ERi 3-12 scopes you get a zero stop (the only configuration with a zero stop that I know of). Leica wasn't very good at standardizing their turret configurations so you never really knew what you were getting until you opened the package (kind of like Christmas). Fortunately for me, the turret "surprises" I experienced with both Leica scopes I purchased weren't deal breakers for the particular applications for those rifles, and they remain my favorite scopes.

On balance, I think that Leica Magnus is the best hunting scope on the market right now and ERi is not far behind it.
I think at this point Leica is reasonably standardized with how they do reticles and turrets. These scopes are pricy, but if you find a deal, go for it. It is an exceedingly well optimized scope. I have recommended to a bunch of people and everyone who has one is happy with it.

Thanks for the help on the Leupold Alumina's folks. Have tried that and will see if it works better.

I can of course buy a Magnus instead, it will be over $1,000 more than the ERi and roughly $1,800 more than the VX-5. Now if it is really a better scope for me, it makes sense to pay the money, I prefer to have equipment that I'm happy with instead of compromising and spending to upgrade later.
There are a couple of things about the Magnus that I'm not aure about though, and I can't get one to try out, or even look at in a store.
I'm not crazy about the illumination controls sitting atop the ocular, though it's what all of the top euro scopes do, I feel it might make accessing the power adjustment ring les ergonomic. I'm not sure about the increased length of the ocular, obviously ot must be neccesary for the field of view they achieve, but it could significantly restrict mounting position on some rifles. I'm not going to pay that kind of money for a scope that will only work on one of my rifles.
Eye relief is less than the ERi amd ER5 scopes, I've read that the eyebox is not nearly as user friendly as well?
Things I love about my ERi (and ER5) are mounting versatility, eye relief and eyebox, and the vibrant contrast which outshines any scope I've owned. Not sure if the Magnus is a better scope for me or not, but I have to make up my mind soon.

I decided on the ERi 2.5-10. I do really love this scope and the price is good so it's a no brainer, except that I have two of them now and that's not quite as fun as buying something different. 🧐
Here in Canada, the Leica ERi on clearance ended up falling between the price of a Swarovski z5 and z6, I'd have considered a z6 if I they had an exposed turret option that I liked nearly so well as the Leupold VX-5 and 6 setup.

I realise that they have ballistic turret scopes, Swarovski is by far the most popular european brand here and are in stock everywhere. However, I don't care for their ballistic turret with the colour coded stops, to me it is designed to function too much like a ballistic reticle in this way, I want something marked numerically. Also, their turrets are a bit taller, which I don't care fpr as much, and they don't lock like the Leupold and Leica do.
Swarovski scopes are also relatively cheap right now, A z3 is maybe $150 more than a comparable Leupold VX-3i and the z5 is around 75% the price of a leupold VX-6 and only a bit more than the VX-5.
Even so, I just don't like Swarovski as much for this rifle, I will definitely lean towards the ligtwieght and compact z3 with 4a for a lightweight hunting rifle for woods use.

I agree the Z3s are nice scopes, I have two 3-9x36 (on a .22lr Brno and CZ527 in .223Rem)
My favourite hunting scope though is my Z4i in 3-12x50. No.4 ret with a red dot in the centre. Sits on my light .257 Roberts and rapidly becoming my favourite rifle.

I've never seen a z4i here, and I'm not certain they are even imported to Canada. I would be interested in checking one out, but internet sales today have meant local shops can't afford to really stock large selections of high end scopes I think, so a lot of things are hard to find on display

Not at all something I'd be interested in putting on a hunting rifle, turret is way too high. Similar to the new Zeiss Conquests with large exposed turrets which seem like a crossover target/ hunting scope to me, but worse.
That Swarovski is less than $3,500 here, in the same price range as a Leica Mwgnus with BDC turret, and significantly less than a Zeiss victory.

Really nice scope. For a long time (and maybe still is) the Z4i had the best light transmission of any Swarovski variables
