I understand mil-dot as I have a FFP SS 3-15 for my AR. And I'm aware that for SFP the scope usually has to set at a specific magnification to be used accurately.

I would think for 2-10 power mil-dot, the 1 mil of 3.6" at 100 yards would need to be set at 10x to be accurate. But what about a 3-9 power scope? If the 9 power setting is indeed accurate, is it still 3.6" at 100 yards or does it need to be recalculated and actually closer to 4" (3.96")?  Thanks.

They build the reticle to the scope and to the mag of there choice. A 3-9x would like be accurate at 9 x. Typically the mag ring will have a mark on it for where a reticle is to be used for measuring.

In a FFP scopes, the spacing is accurate at all magnifications.

In SFP scopes, the spacing is usually accurate at top magnification, whatever that happens to be.  In very high powered scopes, the spacign is accurate at some intermediate setting.

For example, I am looking at the new Vortex Golden Eagle 15-60x52 and the reticle is accurate at 40x.  Sightron SV 10-50x60 is accurate at 24x.

With a well-designed reticle (and I include the SS 3-15's mil-dot reticle) FFP is just the no-brainer way to go. About the only time I use the reticle directly is when sighting in a rifle anyway. Robust, dialable turrets are one feature I won't do without.

If it is indeed accurate at 9x like you mentioned, it does not need to be recalculated.

I'm of the other mindset then Jon, I only crank on a turret when I absolutely have to.
