I am trying to decide on a mil-dot scope for longer-range accuracy. Deer hunting, some varmit and some target shooting. 30mm mount with ring reducers.
I just ordered a sightron 3x12x42 and sent it back. I do not know if the scope was bad or if it just didn't suit me. But i didn't think it was as clear as a simmons aetec I have. Also, the side to side imaging (having no side-movement leeway in getting the correct image when sighting down the scope) was better in the aetec.
I am looking at trying another sightron, the 4/16/42 lighted recticle (on sale for $299) - perhaps the first sightron I had was bad)
I am also looking at Mueller 4x16x50 tactical. $189
Burris fullfield II 3x10x50 lighted recticle $ 348.95 (slightly out of price range)

Questions:
1) What accounts for this focusing I am describing above? Is it simply due to the 44 mm aetec vs the 42 mm sightron? If so, the I wouldn't be happy with the other 42 mm sightron.
2) Mounting with Badger ultra-high rings on flat-top. Would I be better off buying a 30mm scope instead of using the ring reducers? (I already have these mounts)
Which above scope (or other) would be best bang for the buck? Not interested in fixed power scope and want the lighted recticle unless some other performance feature outweighs this feature.

Nikon Buckmaster w/ a mil dot would be right in your price range.

Sorry about the Sightron.

If at first you don't secede...try..try again.

I have been trying to decide on a higher powered scope to upgrade from my Burris Fullfield II 3x9 and have decided on a Nikon Buckmasters 4.5-14 Side Focus with standard Nikoplex reticle. It is also offered in Mil Dot reticle. And as far as I am concerned, clarity, reliability and durability outweigh any other features like lighted reticles. In my own side by side comparisons, I preferred the Nikon Buckmasters to the Burris Fullfield II, the Weaver Grand Slam, the Sightron SII 4-16, the Bushnell 3200 Elite 5-15, and even the Leupold VX-III 4.5-14. It does fit your budget nicely, too.
