Hey there.
So I've been snooping around a little and came across a nice selection of reasonably priced red dot / reflex sights and I'm considering getting one. I have around 300-350 dollars to spend on a red dot. I would be mounting it on my .308 Win, it would be used for thick brush and as a substitute for iron sights. But since I have no experience or knowledge in this area I'd like to hear your opinion. The questions are (): 1. (silly, I know) Would you recommend a red dot sight for hunting? 2. Is 300-350 dollars enough or do I need something high end (Aimpoint, EoTech ... )? We're talking reliability, quality, and withstanding .308. 3. How hard is it to get used to the red dot? How much ammo do you need to spend? 4. I was looking at the Burris FastFire III and the Meopta Meosight II 30, also some Docter sights. Amy recommendations? Thanks and sorry for the noob spam

I hunted one deer season with a 4 MOA Aimpoint M2. Worked well in my area, which is THICK brush, for the most part.
Have you considered a Aimpoint Patrol? About your price range, but it has a 2 MOA dot, which may be a little small. http://swfa.com/Aimpoint-PRO-Patrol-Rifle-Optic-Red-Dot-Sight-P53892.aspx

You could find a used Aimpoint in that price range.

That's a good suggestion. Check out SWFA's Sample List.

I used to hunt with a red dot on a 50cal muzzelloader and it worked ok. The biggest complaint, and reason I ditched it was because in very bright conditions (snow covered ground in bright sunlight) the red dot would wash out and be impossible to see. Maybe one of the red dots with multiple colored dots would work better.
http://swfa.com/Mueller-1-4x24-Speed-Shot-30mm-Riflescope-P56846.aspx I came across this recently and it looks promising but I have no experience with either the brand or the scope. I switched to a older Nikon Monarch (found a new one in a back room) 1.25-4 with the Turkey Plex reticle on my muzzle-loader and it is hands down one of the best short range, quick acquisition, hunting reticles I have used. Its similar to some of the versa plex reticles but the circle (more like triangle in this case) is heavy with fine crosshairs in the center. Big and bold enough to acquire quickly if need be under any light conditions but a fine enough crosshair to make accurate shots on longer shots. I think the closest you can get now is this. http://swfa.com/Nikon-1-4x20-Monarch-African-Riflescope-P42349.aspx I have had a number of different scopes with the number 4 reticle and it is one of my favorites for low light without batteries to fail on you. http://swfa.com/Leupold-175-6x32-VX-3-Riflescope-P12640.aspx I have the above scope on an AR and it is a great in low light with enough power for longer range shots. It also comes in a 1.5-5 version if you want lower bottom end. I'm not a big Leupy fan but this a very good scope and worth the price. Edited by biggreen747 - November/18/2012 at 21:15 |

We measure it with a micrometer, mark it with a crayon, and cut it with a chainsaw.

I vote for the AIMPOINT H-1 2MOA dot if your hunting under 150 yards or less that is.

The Aimpoints so far, even in snow I have not had wash out on me. They turn up bright enough. You could find a used or demo CompM2 in that price range I think. As for recoil, the Aimpoints will handle it no problem. I have seen some cheap ones come apart on AKs and stuff, and one on a 223 AR. I have never had an issue with any of my aimpoints or heard people have issues with EOtech.
