Need some help understanding what scope I have. I purchased a used Rem 700 with a Redfield TX-27 2.5 - 10 power. Took me for ever to figure out the scope is 27 mm tube. Curious are to what people think of these scopes and what would you compare to? I currently have mounted on a 7mm SYW, but am thinking about switching to a Burris Fullfield II 4-16.
Thanks

I am not familiar with that Redfield scope. Generally speaking, if it is an old U.S. made scope it is good. If it is one of the new scopes it is somewhat lacking in quality. Regardless of which Redfield it is, the Burris is probably going to be a better scope.

what are you going to be using this gun for, a 16x scope isnt necessary for hunting deer, but the black diamond with the ballistic mildot would certainly not be a bad idea for this gun, since it is a long range round.

The 27 mm of course being half way between 1 in 25.4mm and the 30 mm tubes more prevalent today. These 27 mm were some of the last (and best) Redfield ever produced and are very well made (having had the chance to examine them in depth, would have bought one but needed a varmit scope). The 27 mm tube was used by Redfield because they knew that in order to go from a magnificationof 5 to 20 a factor of 4 a 1 inch tube would not be enough, but they didn't want the large bulkiness of a 30 mm tube, so a 27 mm tube solved the math and the size problems. (very forward thinking as Redfield always was) For the price you proably got-good find. You got the rings and optional inserts for 30 mm rings in the bargin. If you choose the inserts roughen them up with a little sand paper (600 or so). Feel confident you got a good buy and keep it!!!!! The same quality of Burris would be in their top of the line, not the ballistic plex (current market mover) proably 3x would you paid for this beauty.

Thanks for the information. I orginally purchased this scope on a light weight Rem 700 in 7mm STW, then traded the rifle for a 7mm STW in Rem 700 Sendero (need for weight for comfortable shooting). I pulled the scope off before trading rifles. Have looked around for information about the scopes without much success. The optics seem good. Was thinking about the Ballistic plex mostly for the simplicity of the ranging system.
Redneck - I realize 16 X on the top side is more than I would probably use. I was thinking that for a gun used primary in open country that the lowwed magnification loss (3 verse 4) would not be of significance for me. The 7mm STW is a great black bear round for the Pacific NW. We typically stake out clear cuts and look for a bear wondering through.
Would Redfiled still have the inserts for converting 30 mm rings to 27 mm scope. I looked in their catalog without finding them? Does SWFA carry?
Thanks Eric |

You have a picture of the inserts you sent (e-mail) above. Did you get these with the scope? Do bears really wonder?

We don't carry them and neither does Redfield. I think you are S.O.L.
The pictures I posted are from a scope in our "optics museum" that is not for sale....sorry. |
