I am not sure what forum to put this in, so it's going in riflescopes by default.
I recently bought a little polymer chassis that takes a glock pistol, it'a caa mck (micro conversion kit) and decided a red dot would be fun to try. Not having ever used a red dot, or researched them in anybway for that matter, I decided to dip my toes in with an on sale Nikon Spur from the local Cabela's with the thought I could upgrade once I knew how these things are supposed to work. My problem is, the red dot does not cover the field of view through the sight window. It actually wouldn't have made me think twice, except that it stays clear all the way to the right and to the bottom of the window, but disappears near the top, and starts to fade badly to the left of centre in the window and disappears completely well shy of the left side of the sight window. I dunno, maybe it's not expected that the dot remains consistently strong throughout the glass window, but I would expect the effective area to be centred in the window, not hard to the right side, and definitely not to go out completely in the left quadrant. Is this sight simply broken, is this a common sort of issue, a zeroing issue, or something else? Maybe I need to buy a better sight, what would be a decent quality reflex type red dot? Thanks in advance for the education.

Thanks, I will return it. I assumed that it wasn't simply a zeroing issue, though I haven't zeroed it so though it might be possible.
What would be a good place to start with a red dot sight? I want the open type sight, and ability to be used on an AR, or a handgun. Burris Fastfire, Vortex, Nikon, Trijicon and Bushnell are all that I see around here, though I'd consider ordering something if it came highly reccomended.

How much are you willing to spend?
I have had good luck with Burris Fastfire, Hawke Micro, Shield RMS and a few others. If you want something more specific to AR use (and I would recommend getting separate optics for AR and handgun), the options open up some. I like Shield SIS. Also, I just started testing Crimson Trace CTS-1400 and it is quite nice. ILya

I am thinking $600 Canadian, which it's twice the price of the Nikon Spur as a frame of reference.
Right now it would be for rifle and pcc use, I only bring up pistol compatibility as in the future I may want to try that if I like red dot shooting and the ability to upgrade to a better rifle sight and move my current sight onto a pistol would be a bonus. Shield and Hawke red dots aren't available locally for me to handle, so I would need some idea of comparables. Burris Fastfire is available, it didn't seem quite 1x power to me, as there was a bit of distortion when panning with it.

I've run several brands of red dots. I have had several models of Aimpoint and like those the best. I have had a Vortex Razor red dot and their warranty is superb, buy not a fan of button type batteries. I have a Sig Romeo 5x that runs on a AAA and turns itself on with motion which is pretty cool. Having a common easy to find battery is a plus. I also really like Trijicon products.

I guess I'm going to pick up a Burris Fastfire III and see how well it works.

Very pleased with my Fastfire III Had it on my Benelli Supernova Slug gun, and liked it. Used the Picatinny mount it came with to put on a top eject lever gun I was having trouble with getting an optic to work and like it there (So much so I’m considering getting another fastfire III rather than a true scout scope). In addition, I am thinking of putting a reflex red dot on my 9.3x62 and I’m tempted by the Kahles or Leica options but it might be a 3rd Fastfire I “need”... So I’m that pleased I might buy another 2 Scrummy |

I have/had several “tube-type” red dots and always thought they were nice.
Then I picked up a Vortex Razor and Venom reflex type red dots - what a difference. The windows are larger and much easier to pick up the target with. |

For carbine applications, I am beginning to see a new crop of red dot sights that look kinda like the Razor/RMR/etc, but are bigger. They are not for handgun use, obviously, but on carbines they are really interesting. Leica Tempus is on such type. New Crimson Trace CTS-1400 is another. I am going to go take a night carbine class with the Crimson Trace in a couple of weeks. So far it looks extremely promising. ILya
