He probably never even thought about it.

Yep, we had gun racks in all our trucks when I was a kid, growing up in Winnsboro, TX. Everybody knew everybody. Same mentality there; we never gave any thought to someone stealing from us. I don't even remember us locking our house back then. I see the world of my youth kinda like a Norman Rockwell painting in my mind's eye. Although the current neighborhood I live in is still pretty much like that, overall, I wish I still lived in that world.

Hell, I had a rifle in my truck all the time in my high school parking lot during the fall, as I usually went deer hunting right after school. Back then, if I told one of my male teachers I had a rifle in my truck, he'd likely either say "let's go take a look at it" or he'd tell me about the one he had in his truck.

When I was in the 8th grade, my biology teacher was an assistant football coach. This guy was as big a hunter as I was/am. As part of a discussion about anatomy, he actually brought a deer hunting video to class so we could see shot placement. When the video ended, he asked us why one shot shown on the video was "good" and another was "bad" so he could tie that into his lesson on anatomy and describe what happened biologically with each shot impact.

One time I forgot to bring my homework to class with me. I told him "sorry, coach; I left my homework at home." I'll never forget his response: "if you were going deer hunting, would you bring your aught-six or your .22 with ya?"

My dad took me on a deer hunt once and took me out of school early on a Friday. That Thursday, I told coach I wouldn't be in class the following day, because my dad was taking me deer hunting. He not only gave me an excused absence (as did my other teachers, as it was pretty common for kids to be absent from school at times during deer season) but praised my dad for his priorities and for raising me right.

All of the above is 100% true!

Wow!!  And that was probably in the seventies!!  It was the same with me, but, my experiences were all back in the sixties....

....teachers brought rifles to school ( in their cars...), teachers would talk guns and reloading, etc. to us farm boys during study halls if we sat up close their desk like a little Cub Scout meeting....we used to roam the halls between classes with our books and a Gun Digest or Shooter's Bible in the stack, for looking at during study halls ( or Biology class!!!  Laugh )....

It's probably still that way up in Wyoming.  I know that the Farson, Wyoming High School is closed for the whole first week of hunting season!!  ( ...as of 2004, anyway...)

Heck, our school was only closed for the First Day of deer season!!   Whatever

Back in the 50's we could take off opening day of both pheasant and deer season.

" How did he eat?  Was it nutritional or just crap?  Did he drown in the bathroom?  Did he play with firearms?  Did the cows stampede over him?  Did the old pickup truck finally blow up while he was underneath it fixing the driveshaft? "
