Again a pair from my box.

These are ROSS 7x50s dated 1944. They have had a hard life and pretty much the entire objective ends are corroded and the paint is gone.

Had a quick look through these and found that they were out of collimation. Popped the tops and had a look at the prisms. Every thing seemed to be good and solid in place. So had a look at the other end and found the problem. One of the doublet objectives was loose, the set screws are missing so it was possibly out of conditional alignment.

Used a chinagraph pencil on the lens to mark the current position and started to rotate and center it. After about half an hour, it slowly came into alignment, marking every time with the chinagraph, until it was looking very artistic. Had to check if it carried through the full IPD range and it it did. So happy with that for the moment. Again I need to get some set screws. Got a reply from McMaster-Carr in the US cancelling my order as it is too expensive to comply with US export restrictions. For tiny set screws for god's sake. So I am stuck for the moment.

Here are some photos.

For general information, the stylised NIL stands for Nottingham Industries Limited. These were manufactured under contract for ROSS.

Nottingham Industries Limited was set up by the War Office during WW2 as were a number of other manufacturers to support war production. There is not much on record about this factory that I have been able to find.
