I like to have an open sights option; however, the current mount I have for my mini 30 has so far not been able to use a scope that will adjust low enough with a Weaver style mount that attaches in the cover plate.  I tried the stock mounts with a Nikon scope for a while.  I thought I had a faulty scope until I figured out the ejecting cases were hitting the scope and really pounding it.  I really wanted access to the open sights anyway.  Tried a Barska (not wanting to drop a bundle here) and a cheap gun show sight, neither went low enough.  Looks like Ruger would figure this problem out?  Anyway, does anyone have any ideas for a scope that will adjust low enough? Or a see through mount low enough?  I would like to use this one for deer hunting with the option for aging eyes to use a scope.  At 25 yards the iron sights are deadly, but I just can't see much beyond that for iron.

The Mini was designed in a time long before all this proper type scopes and mounts became so prevalent.

I liked to idea of the American rifle shooting less expensive ammo so much i built one for myself.

I dont have a Ruger. I have an AR in 7.62x39. What i was saying is that many times folks try to make old designs do what modern designs are designed to do. The M1A and AK are perfect examples.

i have a mini 14 with an amega rail, and i think that setup is great. For mini 30 im not sure if amega rail will fit, but the ultimak rail is listed as fitting both post 580 series (with the thick barrel) mini 14 AND mini 30.

i had an earlier mini 14 with the ultimak rail, the reason i went with an amega rail this time, is the fact the amega rail has a longer scoperail where my aimpoint sits closer to the centre of the rifle, making the balance of it better. but the ultimak rail is descent too and maybe prettier looking plus rides a bit lower.

so if you want really low mounted optics on your mini 30, i would suggest this fixed 2.5x leupold scout scope:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000MM47IW?keywords=leupold%20scout%20scope&qid=1444703143&ref_=sr_1_1&sr=8-1

with these rings on it:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/361378783881?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

...and the ultimak rail that will fit your mini 30 is here:

http://www.brownells.com/optics-mounting/rings-mounts-amp-bases/rifle-bases/mini-14-mini-thirty-scout-scope-mount-prod17396.aspx

you will NOT FIND A LOWER RIDING SCOPE SETUP THAN THIS. I have this exact setup on my mini 14 now except for it being a bit higher mounted due to the fact i installed the amega rail (which is higher).

Rings will not catch clothes and the scope is easy to take on and off with these rings. 2.5x doesnt sound alot but ill tell you its way better than iron sights, and this setup is extremely LIGHT WEIGHT. You will not even think about having it mounted on your rifle, i notice no difference in balance or weight after i put mine on compared to the default iron sights i had when the rifle was as it came from factory. That makes it a fast handling little rifle.

id also suggest you install a rear tech sight on it, which i did, and it helps sight adjustment alot, having good backup iron sights is worth it and doesnt cost much extra.

you also get clear access to chamber in case you have a jam cause optics are mounted forward away from the ejection port, and no brass will ding your scope etc.

i find this setup very light weight and compact, and the rifle stays as quick handling and light as it is from the factory, optics are out of the way, glass on the leupold scope is crisp and clear and the magnification is just right for the ranges you'd use your rifle on.

i may add, some say burris scout scope is a bit better if you have poor eyesight (you have thicker reticles and some adjustments on that one):

http://www.amazon.com/Burris-Scout-Heavy-Reticle-Riflescope/dp/B0002IL0EK/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1444704091&sr=8-2&keywords=burris+scout+scope

for me though the glass on the leupold scout scope is outstanding, i dont think you can go wrong with that one, but you might want to do some research first if you use glasses and have poor eyesight.

i would not recomend a red dot like an aimpoint in that case which did not mount well on the ultimak rail for me (you have to put it more forward), but i find the glass on these scout scopes much better if you need a good sight picture anyway.

I'd ask Ruger.

ruger would say the same as me.

there is a scout rail that allows for see trough with irons, but it will make the rifle front heavy.

ultimak or amega rail is what i'd go for, due to light weight. amega has longer rail so something like an aimpoint pro would be mounted closer to your face, which makes the rifle balance better, ultimak is better for a scout scope where mounting point sits further in front on the rail and would make the scope sit lower, so pick your poison.

want to use irons? make sure the rings or mount you pick is easy to take on / off using fingers only and that its not designed so it will hook to clothes, like the ones i posted link to. ive owned minis for years and been testing various setups, this is the way to go.

Honestly my suggestion is pick up a bolt action savage and scope that for hunting, then leave the ruger open sights for self defense. The newer models that are "ranch rifles" come with rings and are much more suited to scopes than the old model using the side plate for a base.
