Went to the range yesterday with a buddy to shoot at 200 yards. He shoots a Savage 110 30-06, synthetic stock, I was shooting a Reminton 700 30-06 wood stock. We bought 4 different boxes of ammo to try out in each gun. Federal Premium Vital Shok 165 gr. nosler Ballistic tip 2800 fps Federal Premium 165 gr. BTSP 2800 fps Hornady Custom 165 gr BTSP 2810 fps Hornady Light Magnum 150 gr. SST 3100 fps
His Savage was shooting 1 inch groups with the Hornady Light Magnum SST 150 gr. 3100 fps at 200 yards!!!! The best group we could get out ot the Remington was 1 3/4 with the Federal Premium Vital Shok 165 gr. Nosler Ballistic tip. So we got to checking the Remington out and noticed that the stock was touching the barrel in 1 spot and decided to float it. So out came the sand paper and 5 minutes later we have a floated barrel. Sat back down on the bench and WOW!!!! Just by removing the pressure on the barrel my groups at 200 yards shrunk in half. My best group was about 7/8 ths of an inch, center to center with the Federal Premium 165 gr BTSP, the next best group was about 1 1/8 center to center with the Hornady Light Magnum 150 SST at 200 yards. Needless to say that we were both blown away with his Savage rifle. It's brand new, right out of the box, with a Leupold VX II on it with the accu-trigger. I think he said it cost him around 350 bucks. What a deal for what that gun will do. Just wanted to share this with everyone. |

Have you done anything to your 700 trigger? I have a 700 BDL in .223 and its trigger is terrible...... at least that's how I feel since I shot my kids Accu-trigger Model 11FL 22-250!

Yeah, I tried adjusting the Remington factory trigger, but I still didn't like the feel of it, so I put in a Rifle Basix trigger that feels great. It's set at 2 lbs pull, no creep, and no over travel. The best money you can spend on a rifle is a good quality trigger. We plan on getting together in a few more weeks and trying out some more brands of ammo to see how they shoot. Want to try some Remington ammo and possibly some Black Hills Gold ammo. I will keep the post updated to share what we find out.
