Hello Tactical Team
Hate to disturb you fans of Schmidt and Bender but not all of thier scopes are fully made in germany now days. Ebay has Hungarian assembled models for sale at a discount price. I called Schmidt and Bender to confirm the production of these scopes and they did confirm that they are real, they said they are not to be sold in the US but somehow they are getting in. Buyers beware!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's actually common place nowadays. I know my Zeiss Conquest is assembled in America, as well as some other top Euro brands. Maybe something like he Zennith is built in the Eastern Bloc, but the parts are still made in Germany, I'll bet?
My PM II is stamped MADE IN GERMANY and the box label, manual and warranty card are all in German.

I know, this is getting out of hand. I loved the days when scopes ,I felt were trully made with pride not mas produced. Out-sourcing is a tragedy.

Pride costs money.
People may say the word quality but vote with their wallet. The current vote is Chinese at wallyworld. Ask S&B how many private secotr $2700.00 scopes they sell each year. |

Schmidt & Bender has a line of scopes labelled Hungarian. They have a 6x42 Hungarian, 8x56 Hungarian and an 8x56 illuminated Hungarian, with 25mm and 30mm tubes. They are considerably cheaper than the same German made models. In pounds sterling over here, the 25mm Hungarian 6x42 is £350 and the 25mm German 6x42 is £428. Likewise 8x56, £380 and £516 respectively. As far as I can find out, their other scopes are assembled in Germany, the Hungarian scopes use the same components but are assembled in Hungary, saving costs.

Well, I'm not going to argue for or against the outsourcing of any company, as brands like Leupold gets their glass from off shore places, but I'm not whinning about my PMII. Personally, as with imported BEER, I want it from the original country of orgin, not any place else.

This is definately common practice here in Europe, a lot of manufacturing has been out sourced to the Eastern block countries for cheaper labour costs. Our motor industry has seen dramatic effects in travelling manufacturer base. I know S&B products very well and posses quite a few of there products which include German and Hungarian manufactured units. To be honest there is no real visable difference appart from the large MADE IN HUNGARY lettering on the top. The glass is the same, reticules are identicle etc. I am lucky enough to have a new Double turn 25 power PMII on my 338 AI AW and a 3x12x50 PMII on my Tikka Tactical, yet for hunting i have (other than US Optics SN Tpal) all are Hugarian S&B'ers and some are years old with no failures or problems and considerably cheaper. |
