Just bought a Savage 93R17BTVS and am trying to select an appropriate scope. The rifle will be used for target/object shooting at ranges of 100 - 200+ yards (no hunting). Probably spend most of my time at ~ 200 but I'm interested in honing my skills at longer distances (200-300 or beyond).  I'm primarily a pistol shooter (Smith 41)  and although I do own a 10/22 and a Mannlicher Schoenauer .308, neither are scoped so this is going to be my first experience with long distance (relatively speaking) scoped shooting.  After doing some research,  I bought a Simmons Whitetail 6.5-20 x50mm Mil-Dot on sale for $125 (was $280).  It got great reviews from almost everyone included people with Leupold and Zeiss scopes. I have not mounted this scope yet and now I'm having some second thoughts.  I can spend more but only if it would really make a difference in my accuracy.  I'm now looking at the Nikon Monarch 2.5-10 x 42mm and the Leupold VX-II 3-9 x42 which cost substantially more.  I know that these are much better scopes than the Simmons but given the type of shooting I'm doing, does it make sense to pay another $250 to get one of these?  Concerns with the Simmons are:

More power than I need? (buy less power with better glass)
50mm which I thought was an advantage but read about need for extra high rings which makes scope too high for proper cheek placement?
Mil-dot reticle not fine enough?
Any other scopes I should be looking at?

I'd sure appreciate some guidance from you experts out there - I'm trying to get this right the first time which is actually pretty challenging for someone with limited scope experience.  Thanks for your help.
