Hello,
New to the forum and searching for some opinions. What magnification would you mount on a ar10? I’m kinda torn between a 1-4x24 or for example 3-9x… Not into the red dot thing, hope not to hurt any feelings
but find them pointless on a larger calibre rifle. Less than 40 yards is revolver range (my point of view). Purpose rifle, is shooting target at 25 and 100 yards range
+ (hope never necessary) home defence (100yards +). I can use a scope on 3x mag. Both eyes open (have one eye
with no depth of field). And is a lighted rectile a plus or a distraction? Thanks |

If it's for home defence and 25yds to 100yds, then the 1-4x24 will do. A lighted reticle helps on a low setting to find the reticle in the dark, but you have to find the target first. An example: a black reticle on a black target in low light may not be seen even if you can see the target, but an illuminated reticle can bee seen. An illuminated reticle will not help you see the target.

For home defence (wortst case) i invision 50 to 300 yards, anything less is handfire.
I do understand that a lighted rectile is easier to place on a dark target. But is it still comfortable to use at 3x magnification with both eyes open or will it distract and make you focus on 1 eye? ps thx for the replies |

Handfire? You meaning a handgun? What about a 1-6x?

I misunderstood the home defense part, so here is attempt #2: an AR10 will punch holes through multiple walls before stopping, it is far from ideal in home defense. If you live alone and no one else for miles, sure; if not, consider something with less over-penetration danger.
Next, shooting a magnifying scope with both eyes open is no problem, but it doesn't work like a 1X or red dot, where both eyes process a single image. If you need true 1X, a 1-6X would be my choice. If you want a bit more on the top, you'll have to give up a bit on the bottom for a 3-9. I have a few rifles with offset red dots. I get your "pointless on large caliber rifles" but the red dot is about speed and "precision" rather than the round being fired. I have a 16"barrelled AR10, it is relatively quick handling and it wears a red dot for when the 2.5-10X is too much. At 20 yards with a fast-moving target, any magnification is too much. For what you state as primary need, I would do a 3-9 with an offset red dot, a decent one is small, unobtrusive, and not nearly as pricey as they once were. I've had good luck with the Burris fastfire series, I think mine are all 2s and 3s. They have a decent battery life, they hold zero, and dot brightness has a memory feature in at least the series 3, coming back where it was at the last cycle. Mine have been reliable in every way. If you don't like that setup, a good 1-6X would work also, so long as it is a true - or very near - 1X at the bottom. The SS is very good, I hear, and I run a Vortex HD2 1-6 and would be fine putting that on an AR10. It is heavy, but sight picture is awesome and the gun isn't light enough to throw anything "off". Here are three scopes I would feel very comfortable with for an AR 10. You could certainly use a 1 to 4 but a 1 to 6 would be better. I like some 3-9 scopes better than others and feel that for fast target acquisition a 2x or even a 2.5 x is a better choice on the bottom end than a 3x is but there are always trade offs when you are comparing scopes. I tend to really like illuminated trijicon scopes because the illumination is always turned on and I consider it a huge advantage to have the illumination in a lot of conditions particularly a wooded area or low light. Of the scopes listed below the only true tactical scope is the SS 3-9x42 and I feel that even though it is not illuminated the huge advantages it offers make it an ideal scope for mid range tactical applications probably as good as scopes four times or more the cost and a size that is reasonably compact with an ability to reach out a very very long way. One can add Kenton Industries Knobs to dial in correction for know distance that correspond to the exact bullet you choose. http://kentonindustries.com/custom-turrets/swfa

This is the least expensive option that I would consider and I have this set up an an AR15 and consider it a best buy. |
