Trying to decide whether I can get by with a Fullfield II 3-9 on this gun. I have the following questions:

1. Is an adjustible objective necessary for a rimfire gun?

2. Any other scope recommendations for this gun?  Preferably under $400

thanks

AO is not "necessary" for a rimfire, but most scopes designed for rimfire use are set for 50 yds give or take. Most scopes for centerfire use are set for 100 yds or more. If all you are going to do is punch paper at a 100 yds it won't make any difference. I have a Ruger 77/17 and use a Burris FFII 4.5-14x42 with the Ballistic Plex reticle and it works great. Fits nicely with the meduim rings and you can easily see hits at 100 yds. It has an adjustable objective so I can focus down to 25 yds (shortest I've shot it at the range) and out to infinity.

Is it your opinion that since I will be using the gun mostly for hunting I might be better off with the 4.5-14 With the AO lens vs the 3-9 Fullfield that I already have?  I just would like to make the righ choice of scope the first time and not be wishing I had spent a little more to start with and leave it at that.

thanks

If you already have it I would try it and see if it works for you. I haven't tried a 3-9 on mine. I knew I wanted more magnification due to the rfles capable range and the size of targets I would be using it on. I know a lot of people use higher magnification, some a lot more. I don't know if I could see the holes on a target at 100 yds with 9x.

The comment about not being able to see the holes in the paper are well taken.  I have not thought of that.  Maybe I will try a 4.5-14.  I buy nothing but Buris scope.  I just have not ever felt I needed higher magnificat under most situations.  My two 22-250 rifles wear a 3-12 and a 3-9 scope but they are shooting larger bullets that make bigger holes.  I think I should try a larger scope on the .17

thanks
