    Posted: February/16/2015 at 20:21

New twist on old topic....My son bought me a SIG716 (7.62 X 51 16" barrel) for my birthday over a year ago and so far I have only shot with the iron sites out to about 100 yards to get the hang of it.  I have been looking at scopes for it since I got it but not really in a hurry.  I want to be realistic about the scope purchase and don't want to pay for a scope that a) performs beyond the capabilities of the rifle, b)outperforms my shooting capabilities.  I am admittedly an amateur shooter but with considerable shooting experience, unfortunately most of it was over 20 years ago with bolt action hunting rifles.  I want a good scope that allows me to take full advantage of the rifle's range capability, tempered with my amateur shooting capabilities.  In other words I don't want to pay for performance and features that only expert shooters are going to discern.  BTW - what is the realistic max range I can expect to accurately shoot this rifle?

Thanks in advance for scope recommendations

Do u want to be able to dial in drops and windage adjustments for longer distances?

Ringing steel at 1000 yards is very doable with the Sig 716 or most 308 AR platforms.  Challenge is always having a place where you can shoot at that range.

I've had a few 308 ARs and have had different rifle scopes depending on the intended purpose.  A couple were long range rifles that I mounted a Weaver 4-20X Tactical on one and a SWFA 5-20X scope.  Both were built for shooting at 600-1000 yards.

My most recent is a 14.7" 308 AR that I have a SWFA 1-6x scope on.  This one was built for shooting out to 600 yards, but to double as a feral hog/hunting rifle.  For my eyes, I feel a little underpowered at 6x out to 600 yards and am looking at the IOR 1.5-8X scope.

Big question for you is what you plan on using the Sig 716 for primarily.  Punching small groups in paper at 100 yards, ringing steel further out or as a hunting rifle.  Folks will be able to give you a better idea depending on the answer to that question.

Thx for your insight - I imagine most of the time this will just be a range gun until I get really comfortable with it - out to 800 yds is about all the room I have.  But I am serious about becoming proficient with it at all ranges in between, so want a good scope...but don't need the top of the line.  And I can't rule out shooting a stray coyote but it won't be a primary hunting rifle.

Lot of options in the mid-range optics for what you are looking to do, but understanding your budget will help.

I've used SWFA 3-15X and Weaver Tactical on my AR and bolt guns that were built for that purpose.  Vortex, Leupold, Sightron, Nikon Monarch and Zeiss HD line all are good candidates.  Price point is around $750.

I'm assuming you are ringing steel at the longer distances, as opposed to trying to cut the X ring.

If small groups at long distance is a goal, I prefer the VX-6, Leica, SWFA HD or Swarovski Z3 line, which will put your around the $1500 or less mark.

These are a few that I can think of off the top of my head. The 1-6x24 is the only one I don't have any experience with, but from what I've seen it's a well thought out scope if it fits your needs.
A budget idea would help too.

I keep coming back to the SWFA-SS-3-15X42 because of great reviews, but just recently saw both the Zeiss 3-15x42 and 3-15X50 on Sample List.  What about these?  And other than lens size, is there any technical differences between these two Zeiss scopes that should affect my decision.  (And price range is in the $500-$1000 range)

Lots of good options in that price range.  You won't be sorry about the SWFA version.  I've used mine quite a bit and have been very pleased.

I have not experience with Zeiss's HD line but have one of their older Conquest and it is also a great scope.  I'm a big fan of the Rapid Z reticle on a hunting scope, but turrets aren't ideal if you are dialing for elevation at long range.

The Leica on the Sample List is worth a look as well.  Good quality glass that I would put in the category of the Swarovski Z3 line.  I also like the Ballistic reticle for the same reason as the Rapid Z on a hunting scope.

First off, welcome to the OT.  The big differences to me between the 2 Zeiss scopes is the reticle and 1st focal plane verses 2nd.
