You left a lot of questions about what your intention is for the scope, hunting, target, what do you consider "long range" with the 5R... However, you have many options.
Before deciding, look at Vortex Viper PST, SS3-9, SS10xHD, IOR Valdada, Zeiss Conquest. Check out SWFA's samplelist. There are a number of very good scopes within your price range and it will boil down to your needs and wants. I've suggested some places to start looking.

He is right... I have just eaten a good large portion of humble pie and pulled the trigger on a Sightron. I have not had it for longer than 2 weeks but have taken it out 3 times and put it through its paces. It does well for the dollars and it is right in your neighborhood. I was very very pleasantly surprised. Why I am eating humble pie is because I challenged what was being said about them and did not think I could find them to be repeatable. While the model I got was a little soft for my liking they of course have already corrected that issue and they have better designs I bought an older model that was "old stock" but it was just last years model. With all of the above said I find the Sightron to have great glass, I always say Zeiss with a question of whose glass but Sightron shines in the SIII line(that is the only I actually have) I did do a side by side with Zeiss and Kahles and Swarovski. There were to small of differences to talk about all at 10x they seemed to be just different shades of bright and clear. Edited by 338LAPUASLAP - March/20/2011 at 13:43 |

Ya know, your query really knd of torques me.
I don't know anything about the price of things in Kanada... except that everything is confiscatorily taxed. Nothing against Kanada, except politics, but the people are great, I love the Ice Fesivals, Ottawa, Montreal, etc (I even like Cold Lake). I was the Foreign Military Sales Case Manager for the F/A-18. Spent lots of time in Kanada.
HOWEVER, you can't expect any of "us" to provide you with good advice on "value" if the object of your "value" cannot be shipped from here. Ask about quality, ask about durability, or specifically state value for the US Dollar. Sorry, but I just don't think it is fair to ask us to calculate "value" in US currency vs a foreign currency. Is your $1000 Kanadian or US? THEN, since SWFA doesn't ship there, it is mox nix. You can't take advantage of the samplelist, you can't take advantage of SWFA's deals, you can't take advantage of any of the advantages of living in the US.
You've set up a conundrum... (A question asked for amusement, typically one with a pun in its answer; a riddle).
Now that we understand the true nature of your question, answers can be presented which actually make sense. Get an IOR 2.5-10.

We have been getting a lot of Canadians on the forum lately. I have no idea what is available to you but the IOR line is very nice glass I would probably go with a higher power range however which may be over budget but save up .
