what caliber? what does barrel length have to do with long shots?

scout set ups are really nice and handy that has a rifle punch in a small package, if that is what you want. 600 make good scouts.

I bought the Savage scout in. 308 years ago. If you have plenty of rifles it's a neat toy to tinker with. I think Leupold makes a nice scout scope. That said, I ended up putting a 3x9x40 receiver mounted scope on it. It's very accurate and the short barrel makes it an excellent deer rifle if you walk a lot or hunt in thick stuff.

the 2x pistol scopes work better, they allow a more forward mt. than the scout leo which is about 2 ' longer.

it's chambered in 7.62 NATO-.308   my thinking based on what I've read/heard is to get long accurate  shots SOP is heavy  long barrel      it has iron/open sights on it now  that are fair to 100yds. but not something I'd gamble with      is the 3X9X40  any particular brand?

If you want to keep it a scout rifle, Dale has it right. I think I put a 2x or 4x pistol scope on it and it worked pretty well. As for the 3x9 scope. I got a great deal on a Burris Fullfield II. Nice scope for the money. For a little more I'd look at the closeouts on Nikon Monarchs or a Zeiss Conquest on the samplelist.

part of my consideration  for the Scout rifle was reading the articles on the Stey/Jeff Cooper  and plus I shot one     but on the con side Boston T. Party( Boton's Gun Bible) didn't seem to like it too much   overpriced and some problems  w/trigger        as I mentioned  I wasn't sold on that route but it shoulders quick and bolt can be worked w/ out losing cheekweld

Both guns are capable of deer sized animals to 400 with scopes and 200 yd with iron (not even a challenge)

out my front door, about 250 yds, I practice dry firing. 7mm-08 sav. 270 FNC mauser

The stey is overpriced , which killed the scout concept to a lot of people,  Ruger brought one out, Oh if only it had iron sights also.

The 1x burris scout scope might work for you if you are looking for a fast action rifle. If you decide to mount a traditional scope there are a couple of scopes made in 1.5-6x42 that might work well for you and still give you the fast action capable rifle you seem to want. Sightron SII makes one that is fairly inexpensive and I have been wanting to buy one and try it out but I'm not there yet. Another possible is the Aimpoint 9000L 2x in 1moa dot it could be mounted either way.

Another suggestion for a rear mount with 1x, and probably the best, is the 1x4 Nightforce

depends-- the sav doesn't even come close to the above fnc in the heavy duty department in any area, so where are you going to start rebuilding -- to do it right//    The hollow plastic stock, with a good mcmillian, the trigger guard, with steel, the hoaking bolt release, the stamped steel sear, (to say nothing of the allen screw it rests on),  Personally I'm not going to do anything but shoot the sh*t out of it and have fun. and it's a 7mm-08 very accurate, outstanding from a shoot and scoot steel target point-- maybe take hunting a couple of times.
