What scope would you suggest for a Ruger 77/44? It would be used for
hunting deer 100 yards & under. Needs to be good in low light since it will
mostly be used in wooded areas. I was thinking maybe the Leupold VX3
2.5-8X36. I need your opinions. Thanks

good choice but you probaly won't need 8 pwr on top .. But if that works for you - great ..

I'd go with a 1.75-6 VX3 if the Leupy name is a gotta have ...

Or a 2-7 Vortex, or Monarch 2-8 , or even a Weaver 1-3

I agree with all the choices so far, something with in this power range is about perfect.  Some years back I had a 96/44 with a bushnell trophy 1.75-4x32 with the circle X reticle.

I really think the power ranges in the scopes below is what I would like.  Like you say I probably won't use the 8X power except for sighting the scope in.  I was thinking the Leupold VX3 2.5-8X36 might be brighter since it had the larger objective.  I don't want to make a purchase & then a year or so later wish I had bought something else if you know what I mean.  Would any of these below be superior over the others optically?  Also which has the best recticle for low light?  Thanks so much for all your advice.

I have several Ruger 44 rifles (96/44, 99/44, and 77/44).

To me, they are best fitted with something in a smaller package and lightweight.  All my rifles like that are topped with the Leup VX-3 1.5-5X heavy duplex.

The heavy duplex is perfect for shorter range deer woods, and shows up well in lower light conditions.   I have several 2.5-8x Leups as well, but the 1.5-5 is still my favorite.

I've never had a light gathering problem from the 1.5-5x during legal shooting hours.

I see the point about sighting in.  That extra magnification would help in load development as well.  Shoot for the Viper 2-7.

One of the Viper closeouts would be your best bet imo.
