    Posted: June/08/2010 at 11:47
I was wondering if the Leatherwood 1-4x24 CMR Tactical scope would withstand the punishment of a mini 14 rifle ? Also was wondering about the Millett DMS-1 1-4x24 scope as well. Which one would be the better choice? I have read a few horror stories regarding the Millett..poor customer service, etc. I want a scope that can take a beating as most of you know the mini 14 gives to scopes. I have the ranch version which of course has built in scope mounts cut into the receiver. I also would need to know which rings to use..med high..high..etc. Thanks for any responses in advance!! By the way, new user here, from Northern Indiana.

Welcome to the site.  I dont' have any hands on with either of those scopes so I will let someone else get that.  I will tell you that SWFA has a 1-4 comeing out in the SS line that will most likely be rate for the .50 like all the others. price tag will be higher i imagine thatn those two but i'd say it be near unbreakable for that gun

Still in the improvement phase, but it's worth waiting for!

This one of the new and improved ranch rifles, or the older model?

yogi

There is much good Mini-14 info in the Mini-14 section of the PerfectUnion.com forum and much good Mini-14 specific Ruger ring info in the Scope Ring Finder section at shopruger.com.  Don't think these references violate any OT non-compete rules.

I have a 580 series Mini (tapered barrel).  A set of what Ruger calls high rings (5KHM) came with the rifle and I currently have a Mueller Tac II 3-10x44 mounted on it.  The objective bell just barely clears the barrel with the lens covers on.  I'm not familiar with the scopes you mention, but I would guess they could sit closer and you could get by with Ruger low rings.

Hope this helps.  BTW, don't fall into the "the Mini will never be accurate so it's not worth a decent scope" trap.  There are several inexpensive things you can do to reduce kick and improve accuracy.  Check out the sticky on installing a 1911 buffer in the recoil spring/guide rod.  I did that and it reduced my record-setting brass ejection distances considerably.

Thanks ONFINAL, I am on the PerfectUnion forum alot. I found this optics forum while searching for a reasonable priced 1-4x24 scope that would take the punishment of the mini. I was actually looking for opinions and or thoughts on the Millett DMS-1 but I have since read many bad things about them and want opinions about other scopes other people have on their Mini's. I want the ability for close up shooting as well as out to say 100 yards.

If you can afford the cost I would go with Trijicon's Accupoint as for rings the low 30 mm ruger rings should work from Ruger.  Leupold also makes some that fit the ruger mount and  Burris makes Ruger to Weaver adapter bases.
Ruger specific rings are spendy and I prefer the ones made by Ruger as they have two screws each side where Leupold's are one screw per side but I have used both and both work well. I have found that Ruger shipping is quite prompt and comes by regular mail.
I have a Bushnell trophy scope on a Ruger however for some strange reason I have not seen that model for sale think it was discontinued

The Bushnell Trophy with the dot was discontinued. Before I got one Head Banger

Looked like a pretty ideal scope for a mini or AK type rifle. I've seen some on Ebay, and they still have a few in stock on another site. "to remain nameless"

1.5-6 x 42 Bushnell Trophy

SWFA does sell this one which I would assume is pretty close.
