Hey guys,

Just joined the forum - on a very steep learning curve and looking for some scope recommendations.

New hunter and drew an Arizona late season bull tag. Bought a Tikka T3 hunter .30-06 and need a scope. Had settled on the Zeiss Conquest HD5 2-10 x 42 and then figured out that the rapid z-600 reticle only works on 1 power (still not positively sure about this, see this thread: http://forum.snipershide.com/snipers-hide-rifle-scopes/87982-zeiss-z-plex-reticles-not-so-great.html).

If I'm correct about the Zeiss, it might be a deal breaker.

Here's some more info.

Longest ethical shot I'll make - 400 yards
FFP or SFP?
I'll drop up to $800
I think a variable of 3-9 or 3-15 x 42 might be best.
Be nice to interchange scope with an AR for coyotes and target shooting

Like the:

Vortex Viper PSTs
Zeiss Conquest HD5 (I thought)
Nikon Monarch (same limitations as Zeiss it appears)
SWFA 3-9 or 3-15
Some Leupold?? so many hard to know.
Burris Veracity
Some Weaver??

I know this is long winded, but after looking at all the above I'm frustrated - you don't know what you don't know.

Any insights are much appreciated. Thank you gentleman!

I think out of those you mentioned the Zeiss Conquest or Monarch would be a great choice.

I have a different Conquest, and also have a Monarch 4-16 BDC and that power may be

one you would consider.

If you want to use the ballistic reticle then you will need a rangefinder to know the

distance of your target.  The Z600 will be just right for the 30-06.

Practice and shoot a lot before you go to the field.  Find a local range.

Good luck with your hunt.

Open Space, you've got a fine shooting rifle, so I, like you, would put a really good hunting scope on it.  From your list, I'd forget all of them except for the  Zeiss HD5 (I like your choice, but I'd choose a basic duplex reticle), or a Leupold VX3 3.5-10x40 w/ CDS dial.   I wouldn't bother with the dots, hashes, etc on a hunting scope, personally, because they can be hard to see in low/challenging light conditions.

I'd sight in 3" high @ 100 yds, allowing you to be able to "hold on hair" out to a bit over 300 yds, which will likely take care of 95% of your shooting possibilities anyway.  Good luck!

Thanks for the responses. I've been reading since my post and now believe my confusion is more about reticles and ballistics - not brands and glass and power. Mils, moa, duplex, bdc? Got some homework to do. Down the rabbit hole I go - good stuff!

I wouldn't worry too much fancy reticles. As stated above, duplex is great for low light and also speed.

More important I reckon would be understanding of MPBR (Max Point Blank Range).

Have a google or search here for it. It helps you a lot in the field where you might have some time pressure. (Sadly animals don't often stand nicely broadside in view for as long as we might wish).

Good luck on your hunt!

This ^^^^

Knowing the MPBR and sighting my Tikka M695, .25/06 with Barnes 100g TSX's, in @ 2.75" high at 100 yds allowed me to hold hair to 375 yds for a nice 8pt. last fall.   That plus gun range shooting to 300 yds (longest target our range has).

Some people are educated BEYOND their intelligence.
