Hello Folks,

Is the weight of the scope important on a lightweight mountain rifle under 6 lbs?

I have seen several threads concerning scopes for the Sako Finnlight, but none that address that specific question.

I plan to use this as a multipurpose rifle, primarily for deer and elk.  I chose the rifle because I like to get out of my truck and hike a lot.  I plan to purchase a high end scope with a budget between $1K - $1.5K.  I am sure you all will have a lot of recommendations (they are welcome) but as I choose between the various features do I need to restrict the options to a certain weight due to the weight of my rifle?

Thanks in advance!

Not really.  I would not go to crazy as it can make your rifle top heavy.  I have a under 6lb rifle and have a 17 oz scope on it.

Works great.

In my opinion, lightweight rifles are at their best with lightweight scopes.  The biggest reason for this is not so much overall weight, but rather balance.  Hence, it really comes down to a combination of weight and mounting height of the scope.

It might take some experimentation with different rings.

Then there is the question of how long of a shot you might take, whether you want an illuminated reticle and what size of an objective lens you are looking for.

If low light is a big deal and you expect you might take a shot that is on the longer side, the best 1" scope for low light is likely Kahles KXi 3.5-10x50.  I wrote an article on one of these and it is excellent:

At a bit over 16ozs it is not light for what it is, but not as light as some of the smaller scopes.  For a 50mm objective illuminated reticle, it is definitely very light and compact.  However, because of that obective, you might not be able to mount it as low.

If you are really looking at the most compact package possible, you should check out the new Razor HD LH 1.5-8x32 and Leica ER5 1.5-8x32 that are about to hit the market in a month or two.

That will save you 3-4 ounces of weight and allow for a lower mounting at the expense of low light performance.

My "go to" lightweight scope has been (for several years) a Swaro 3-9 X 36. To me, it's about perfect.
