New to forum and wanted everyone's opinion on which new scope to buy. I have a 16x ss and love it, but want a variable with more magnification for long range target shooting as well as groundhog hunting. Was thinking the ss 5-20 or the Burris xtr 2 5-25x. What's everyone's opinion between the 2? Thanks in advance.

I don't own the Burris but I have no problems with my SS 5-20. Routinely shoot to 1K with it.

I haven't used the Burris, have time on the SS 5-20, good scope for the money.
Do you have experience with >20X scopes? My general thought on the topic is that I hate them. That said, I do have a few, and do on rare occasions take them up to and over 20X, but my best shooting is usually maxed at around 15X, sometimes 18X if it is a good, solid, fixed position shot. More magnification often seems like a good solution, I find it seldom is. If you are set on a 20X, the SS is about as good as you will find in that price range.

I have a 300 win mag I built for long range shooting with a 20 moa ken Farrel base. I just like to see things up close and personal when shooting. Feel like shoot small hit small. Lol besides my eyesight isn't what it was in my teen age years. Lol. Just wanted to know which is the better scope? Ya know glass and repeatability, toughness? Thanks guys.

I understand your sentiment but in reality RC is spot on. I routinely shoot, 600,800,900 and 1K yards in matches, mirage, heat off the barrel, just being in the south on a mid spring or summer afternoon makes a 2 MOA target dance like a meatball at a fat mans convention. Hitting a target at range becomes a matter of rock solid basics. At 1K you can see all you want, you can have the dope for the day, cant the reticle just 2 degrees and you've missed your target. Always go with better resolution than magnification and practice the basics. Good luck!

I have no experience with the Burris, but I do with the SS. Understanding the prior comments, I would recommend the SS.

I have ss 5-20 and burris 2-10. To me image quality seems slighty better on SS. Both have good knobs and have tracked good for me. Burris zero stop is nice.
Is zero stop and 5x more mag more important? Or is slightly better image quality? Thats a tough choice. My choice would be SS |

Thanks fellas, I think I'll go with the ss. I already have a classic ss in 16x and love it, especially the milquad reticle. Just was thinking about upgrading to more power in a variable ffp scope.
