    Posted: February/17/2006 at 08:44
Browsing around Gunbrocker and Gunsamerica cost me some money the other day when I found a Kimber 84 in 7mm-08 with a nice Select French Walnut stock.  My boy has been trying to take over my Kimber 260, so this will be used for deer, hogs, elk next fall, and every day carry for varmints of all kinds.  I'm wanting something different for a scope, rather than my usual Conquest 3-9 or VX III 2.5-8.  It's got to be compact, because these rifles are so handy.  That pretty much rules out a signature select or a 4200.  Any suggestions?  I'd like to keep it under $600 or so.

Why does it rule out Signature Select? You can consider 1.5-6x40 and 1.75-5x32 which are pretty trim. Same deal with Elite 4200 1.5-6x36.

Also, for light weight and small size you can consider one of Burris Short Mag scopes.

If you want a bit more magnification, there are some choices out there:

Trijicon Accupoint 3-9x40 is a nice fairly lightweight scope.

Nikon Monarch is pretty light with two versions that would work well for you: 3-9x40 and 2-7x32.

Sightron S2 3-9x42, 2.5-7x32 and 2.5-10x32 would work fine.

Weaver Grand Slam 3-10x40 is similar in weight and size to comparable Nikon and SIghtron, and 1.5-5x32 is a definite lightweight.

Personally, for a trim rifle like that I would lean toward something along the lines of 2-7x32.

Ilya

Thanks for the suggestions.  I have a Signature Safari 1.75-5 on my Marlin 45-70 and like it on that, but I think I want a bit more on the top end.  I've also found on those lower power variables I never use the low end, so I might as well get a 4X or 6X fixed.

The Sightron 2.5-7 is a good thought.  I'm going to check that out.  I bought a Kahles 2-7X36 in the past and didn't think it was worth the money.

Thanks again.

That Kahles is a nice scope, but not for the money, you are right.  Sightron 2.5-7x32 is fairly inexpensive at ~$250 and is available with two different reticles: Plex and Double Diamond which is designed for shotguns, but is one of my favourite alround reticles.  It is very fast at short distances, but not excessively busy on the other hand and provides a couple of holdover points for longer range work.

mwyates, I own a 84m which I put a 2.5-8x36 Vari-X lll and and love the combo.  The Leupold is a very light scope,it's durable with good optics and fits this rifle like a glove. I agree that the Kahles is pricey and I think that the Leupold will serve you well. It will be a great combo. IMHO. Also, the 3-9 Conquest will be better optically and still fall into your budget. Why try to be different, these are near perfect choices for your Kimber. Rather than trying to be different, I would go with either of these two scopes as top choices. Unless you really feel you will benefit with a variable with a top end of 8X, I would give serious consideration to the Elite 4200 1.5-6x36. It is a great scope, especially with the Firefly reticle. It is a great low light scope and will save you a few bucks. It  has features that all other scopes simply don't offer. Good luck with your choice. A mean Whitetail rig you have there. The Kahles 3-9x42 or the 2-7 American series is compact and would also be a great choice. I agree that the Kahles are pricey, but they are excellent scopes.

Roy,  I have the 2.5-8 on my kimber .260, and it is just about perfect.  I was seduced by a Conquest 3-9 for a little while, but ended up taking it off and putting the 2.5-8 back on.  I really can't justify wanting something different.  I ended up ordering a FXIII 6X42.  I do keep my 2.5-8 on about 6X 90% of the time.  I haven't had a fixed power scope in a lot of years.  I'm anxious to see if it will work for me.  I'll post my findings after I've used it a while.

Good luck with your new Kimber. I have 2 of them and love them both. They make a very handsome rifle. The new FXIII is supposed to be a great scope, so I think you will be thrilled. Keep us posted yates. Again, good luck with your new rifle.
