I have a cheap POS and am looking into getting a real scope that I can actually keep zero when I adjust for focus.  I'm looking at a 6x14 - 40mm and need some advice

I guess the best advice I can give you is spend just a little more and buy one of the two of these.

Another good choice would be the Bushnell Elite 4200 4-16x40

For around $500 there are quite a few good choices.

Unless this is a dedicated bench gun or long range varminter I would probably not go with a 6-24x scope.  If you plan to shoot fairly far out some thing along the lines 4-16x40 or 4.5-14x4 is likely a good choice.  Bushnell Elite 4200 4-16x40, Sightron S2 Big Sky 4-16x42 and 4.5-14x44 are good choices.

If long range shooting at small targets is not on the agenda, a regular 3-9x42 from a reputable maker is the way to go.

Nikon Buckmasters 4.5-14x40

Nikon Buckmasters 6-18x40

Both are $300 and have a lot of great reviews & feedback around the web...this is if you can't make the splurge for the others listed up above.

The Burris Fullfield 2 is something that is about the same league as the Nikon Buckmasters and is $50-120 more and does not have the side focus.
