I have been attempting to mount a Burris 3-12X handgun scope on my M1A Scout using the integral rail on the barrel and UTG QD rings. When I bore sighted the scope at about 20' in my basement, the laser was about 1.5" below the crosshairs, which was very close to the scope's height above the bore. However, when I got to the range, it was shooting about 14" high AT 25 YARDS! Even when I lowered the crosshair as low as it would go, it was still shooting something like a foot high. I swapped the rings to be sure there wasn't a variance in the height, with the same results. I finally got on target with the crosshairs set as low as possible by taking a .22LR case, flattening it with my Leatherman, and using it as a shim under the scope in the front ring.
Is it possible the rail might be out of whack, or do I just need to grit my teeth and use a thicker shim? Anyone else have similar problems? I've never mounted a scout scope before, but have had no problem mounting and zeroing conventional scopes. Thanks. |

I fear I've reached that stage in life where I prefer a pedantic evening at home to a bracing exchange of gunfire in the dark.

I had a similar experience with a Leatherwood ATR 2-7x Scout Scope I mounted on a 45-70 Marlin SBL with an XS Sight Systems Scout Rail to test durability of the scope before using it on a somewhat scruffy truck gun in 7mm-08. In my case the lowest elevation only got it on paper at 200 yards which was fine for my 100 test rounds. The same scope and rings work fine on the 7mm-08. A Burris 2.75x Scout Scope in the same height rings works fine on the Marlin with both scopes near center of their elevation adjustment range for 100 yard zeros. In your situation it may have something to do with differences in focal plane settings between an EER pistol scope and an IER scout scope. Someone here should have a more informed response and solution.
