Personally, I would go with a fixed power scout scope, but if you insist on a variable, try these:

Both Leupold and Burris make pretty respectable fixed power scout scopes. Leupold's 2.5x28 has somewhat more flexible eye relief. Burris' 2.75x20 has a bolder reticle and a touch more magnification.
