I have a Scheels Paragon Hunter scope and it has a screw on the power ring's hump. I have not used the scope and I bought it used from my brother in law who did not know what it was for and has removed it once or twice. Did he purge the nitrogen or is it a screw for locking the power ring at one setting? I have seen other scopes with this also and have always wondered.

Welcome to Optics Talk.
I don't believe that screw is related to the nitrogen. I think the nitrogen ports are typically located half way up and on the bottom of the scope tube of most scopes, though I haven't seen yours admittedly.

OK. Kinda what I thought but needed to ask. I had thought about finding or making a screw that was longer to use as a cat tail. I have some Breakaway Coasters coming from Britain but the screw in are nicer I think.

Just an observation, but personally, I'd be wary of buying used gear from a guy who makes a habit of removing screws for which he has no idea of their function. If he will do that, no telling what else he may have monkeyed with.
From my way of thinking, the manufacturer put fasteners on the product for a reason, and if that reason isn't mentioned in the owner's manual with specific instructions on when and why the owner should remove the screw(s), then you probably should leave them be. But, that's me. |

Point taken Ted but I purchased it for 1/4 of price in the store and it has a lifetime over the counter no questions asked warranty. I got the deal either way on this one. I had plans for it to go on my 308 but I might have it end up on my 22 long range gun.
Casting in ND. Oh ya, lots of it too but I stick to throwing my lead down range at ground squirrels, cows and starlings. I ordered from Britain because it was the best price shipped and I had money in paypal.

I knew a guy who unscrewed the ocular plumb off of a Brand New Leupold scope that he had just bought. I was speechless. He simply screwed it back on. ( I wonder what he's doing now?)

Major, major necro, but this forum kept popping up when I searched the same question all kinds of different ways on google to no satisfying answers. So I decided I'd do my own digging bc I wanted to figure out if it was a place to mount a throw lever too, and to help other people who stumble on this thread (mods pls lock after this lol.)
Turns out you could screw in a little cat-tail style throw lever, but that's not really a good idea. It won't un-nitrogen-purge your scope, but its the screw that connects the outer power zoom ring that you touch with your hands to the inner power zoom ring that's part of the inner tube. If you unscrew that, you can misalign them and have the potential of losing it, tho I'd imagine it prolly wouldn't damage anything fiddling around trying to find it. Also, not a good idea to have a big probe sticking out the side of you scope that goes all the way through to the surface of the inner tube. TL;DR: Don't unscrew it, but you're not screwed if you do, just screw it back in gently and pretend you're not an idiot that goes digging around in your belly button :) Source: Various images of scopes "cut away" showing how the internals work n' whatnot. Found these particular images that show a screw going in through the hump on the zoom ring to the zoom ring on the inner tube. I couldn't find any actual written-word sources, so you're going to have to trust your eyes. (Also, given this can change from scope to scope, brand to brand, depending on just how they're built, or if there even is one at all, so milage may vary on that bit about it being a blind hole that won't void your nitrogen, but it'd be pretty stupid and fragile to build it that way I'd imagine, if you've got a good scope.) ![]() ![]() And for those of you with bad eyes ![]() Hope that helps!
