That has happened over here in Australia...snake dropped through ceiling fan cover...i'd be absolutely scared witless if it had happened to me as that snake was a Brown Snake (one of the most dangerous snakes in the world!).

Here in south Ga. the cottonmouths and rattlers tend to run on the "large" side!....if Im in the woods I like my Ruger Vaquero 44 mag with rat shot. for use around the house a 20ga with bird shot works fine.

Where ya at Tman. I am from the Brunswick/Golden Isles area. I live in Atlanta area now, but sorely miss the southern part of the State. And yes, we grew them snakes big down that way when I was a kid. 6 ft rattlers were nothing special to see back then. Old man Dawson killed one that was 8 ft and a few inches. Kinda hard to tell exactly with the head blown off. Cotton Mouths are the worst though. They will chase you down, and had a few that dropped outta the trees into the boat while fishing the Cypress (black water) swamps. Snakes in the boat and gators in the water, take your pick.
Talk about the "pucker factor" jumping a few degrees north of anxious..... Shocked

I use a Ruger 10/22 (open sights) and some CCI hollow point ammo. That Remington Yellow Jacket is good ammo too.....just about cuts them in half! My dad & I always take the 10/22 with us when we go bass fishing in the river. As we're trolling along and see a Moccosin (spelling), we grab the gun a pop that sucker...in the head if possible. No kidding Cottonmouth's will chase you down. When I was 6 I had a single shot 22 and went down by the San Marcos river and slid under a barb wire fence gate. It was in the fall and there were lots of leaves on the ground. When I slid under the gate there was about a five foot Cottonmouth under those leaves and he chased me around in a circle with me shooting at him for what seemed like forever before my mom heard all the noise and came down with my 30-06.  I was so little I didnt know to shoot the snake in the head I kept shooting its body. After about 4 rounds of 30-06 that was all it took.  and I have several other snake stories at least a half dozen very close calls.  I only had one othe snake chase me and it was also a cotton mouth. I've had a snake on my doorknob copperhead, snake drop in my boat copperhead. Snake in the driveway of my girlfriends house when I was walking her to the door in the dark (cottonmouth). Snakes under the steps at the house (coral snakes). Ive shot snakes out of trees 120 ft in the air. Ive swam down the river and had a cottonmouth drop in the water right next to me.  Ive opened the door of the truck and looked out before stepping down only to see a snake draw his head back in his hole.  Ive had rattle snakes swim by my boat.  It s no wonder I have no luck left I've used it up on snakes.

Me too Wes. I was at work about three years ago, and had to do my rounds inspecting erosion control. Walking into creeks and such in tall grass. I felt a rather had knock on my boot upper, and when I looked down it was a large copper head. I stepped on it's head and cut it off. Carried it with me to the truck and threw it in the back. Went to the next site, and was struck by a diamond back rattler. Those things hit hard, it left a bruise thru the boot leg. He was only 5 foot. I went to step on his head and he struck again. I managed to get the boot on him this time, and cut him off too. Threw him in the truck, and went back to my inspection. When I got back to the office, I told my boss about the experience, and he went and looked in the truck bed. When he came back in he gave me the rest of the day off. Said I'd used up all my luck for one day, and didn't want me to get hurt.

What kind of boots did you have on?Shocked
Life's concerns should be about the 120lb pack your trying to get to the top of the mountain, and not the rock in your boot.

The boots are Rockies Snake boots. I ain't dumb enough to do that job ill equipped. I was also wearing brush pants. They are a heavy cordier fabric, like the boots are. They are designed for tree cutters for protection against chainsaws and such.

As far as fear of snakes goes. I really don't have one. I grew up with them, and have been bitten by a copper head when I was 8. Dad used to bring home Rattlers after his Guard exercises every Summer. My friends would always be there to see them. Had them get loose a couple of times. I'm one of those that has no fear of that which he already knows, my fear comes from that which I don't already know. I grew up in S.E. Ga. Lot's of gators, and poisonous snakes, well, not just poisonous snakes, lot's of snakes. Huge snapping turtles and Wild Boar too. Now sharks on the other hand. The fact that they get you without you having a warning, and that you are in their area of operation. That is a legitimate fear of mine. When I was younger, I can honestly say I had no fear at all. I swam the sound from St. Simons Island, to Jekyll Island for my swimmers badge in Boy Scouts.

I have no fear of non-venomous snakes, and I have no fear of venomous snakes once I'm sure they're dead dead dead.
I was wondering if you were wearing snake boots.

Man I don't go into anything even related to snake country without wearing them. Too many close calls. That was one thing that used to chap my hide in the Army. Land navigation training, I could go out and inspect the country side for the course, and wear anything I wanted basically. The trainees would have to go in and they were expected to be in uniform, without such protection. There were two other Rangers in my platoon, and we would have to navigate the course before we allowed the trainees to do so, and of coures we had to be in uniform then. It wasn't a huge risk for us, because the odds we would get lost were remote. Get bit radio in coordinates for evacuation. No problem. But trainees out in the Texas brush country? 14 squads at that. On a course that was 12 miles X 12 miles. Luckily we were able to convince the Commander to give each individual a smoke grenade for emergency use. We had one squad got lost and went for the clearing after dark. Rocky ground in the Texas brush, a very cool late summer evening. You can figure out the rest. We could hear the rattlers coming over the radio call.

Im with you on not liking water I cant see what is going on around me. I just hate dark water that you cant see down in.  I've been out in it a lot of times but you can get a mighty big fish into waste deep water so I like it clear as possible. It doesnt bother me nearly as much having sharks swim around if I can see them over the side of the boat caues I am not getting out and I know if it has teeth it bites.

I have gotten out of a boat in the swamps in black cypress water up to my waist a few times. That can be nerve racking because of the gators, but I don't fear them that way. Sharks just do it though, they are so fast, and well, carrying a pistol on the beach is generally frowned upon, and more than waist deep when in a boat or swimming further out from a boat isn't really pistol friendly either.

Thanks Tony. it's a pleasure to meet you here. I've stomped around Nahunta when I was younger. From Savannah to Fernandina I think I've seen everything through there at the time I lived there.

Um yeah Mike. Thanks...... That came out before I did the swim across the sound. I remember saying noyhing to worry about, Great Whites don't come near the coast that far south until late fall. 3 weeks after the swim, a large Tiger Shark (11 ft 794 lbs) was caught right there where we had swam. Haven't looked at things quite the same once I grew older/wiser.
