SWFA SS 3-9x42 vs Trijicon 3-9x40, Mil-Dot Crosshair I have read so much about these 2 but still not decided. Maybe several of you can write in with some replies in layman terms that might help several of us that are still undecided. And I guess if I am asking for layman terms I am not in need of a real good scope - but I only plan to make this purchase once and know I will grow into the scope - appreciating it in time. My use for it: hunting, target
practice, end of the world scenarios So we are not talking long range competition. For me - I can see pretty good but feel the illumination of the Trijicon gives it a huge advantage. That colored dot should allow for quicker targeting. But perhaps the advantages of the SS are currently going over my head - thus the request for some clarification as to why some feel that is a better scope. Thanks for taking the time to do this guys. The SS has several things that the trijicon doesn't. Target style turrets to quickly dope your shots (dial in correction), a matching turret reticle system, (the adjustments match the reticle by both being in mils) and FFP ( I'll do my best to describe this in easy terms, the reticle will always be accurate to the object your aiming at. If on 3x the object is 1 mil in size, then on 9x the object will be the same, you can range on any power. You can also dial in corrections based on your ranging on any power. Say you miss 2 mils to the left you simply dial in 2 to the left and youre there no matter the power you have the scope set on.)
The Trijicon has the illuminated reticle, nice for a hunting scope. Its not got target turrets so dialing in isn't what its made for, its also SFP.
I prefer the SS. I have #8 of the SS 3-9 and it is my favorite scope for all around everything.

I own both, and neither would fill the job the other current does - or not very well.
For your stated purposes, I would recommend the Trijicon. For a general-purpose rifle, I find capped turrets work best, and second-focal plane is more than adequate. The SS is a great scope and a huge bargain at its current price; but it is a tactical scope, best suited for precision shooting - where the shooter plans on significant investment in time and setup. Both are great scope. I own both and have significant time behind both. For your stated purposes, I'd recommend the Trijicon.
