Well after listening to it for a few years and enduring those commercial for LifeLock for almost as long...
it happened, my son had his identity stolen.  Apparently Feb 20th was a dark day!

I received mail in my son's name at my house early last week.  It looked like junk mail but I opened it just to make sure.  It was a rejection letter from Best Buy for a CC.  I didn't think much about it at the time.

Monday I received a bill from ATT Mobility for my son.  These are the first two pieces of mail for him I have received it a couple of years!  Now my son has owed his own house for 5+ years and has been married going on 2 years.  So, again I opened it to find a huge bill.

Some clown had bought two Iphone X cellphones and set up a 3 line multi-user account with VVM service.
Those iphone Xs are $1150 each!!!  So the bill was for $450 followed by 24 months of $175....

I immediately texted my son and he was clueless.  I gave him the account # and 3 phone #s on the account.  That's when he found out it was ID thief.  He also found out that ATT allows purchases to be billed to your account.  They had purchased over $5000 worth of stuff from Best Buy in Michigan.

Now the denied CC app made sense.  So far the total is over $11,000.  Now I wish I had immediately said something to my son when I got the Denied CC app in the mail, we might have been able to prevent some of the purchases.

We are surmising that there was a data breach at Penn Tech College or the dorms where my son stayed based on the fact that all cells are from that area code and the only time anyone in our family lived there was my son at college.  it also explains why it came to my address since my still lived at home then....  The ATT account was opened using my son's Drivers License and SS # and only the college and or dorms would have had access to that info in that area....

All of this is tremendously scary and needless to say my son is freaking out as am I...

Stay tuned for more and it develops Loco

ID theft is scary chit, and you never know when it's going to hit. The scary part is how easy it is to steal if your not paying attention. A lot of places like doctors offices will ask for your DOB, SS no. address, etc.. Info they really don't need, but if it gets into the wrong hands, it could cause you a real pain.

Years ago, I had a friend that was one of the first victims of ID theft; way before LifeLock. It took him years to get his life back in order.
Life's concerns should be about the 120lb pack your trying to get to the top of the mountain, and not the rock in your boot.

My ex-wife had her purse stolen at a Walmart in DFW ten years ago...and even though she notified everybody immediately somebody was still wrecking her credit...

Her credit is still not good...

I had someone use my debit card number to buy something in Florida about a year ago. I just happened to be up at 4 AM and was looking at my bank account online when I saw that a purchase had been posted just MINUTES ago! I had to wait till 9 AM to call the bank. I went to the bank at lunch and changed my debit number and cancelled the old card and filed a Fraud claim. A couple of months later the bank reimbursed the $40 or so and I even got about $10 extra added back onto my card!

I don't know how someone got my number to make a purchase online....it was a purchase at a florist shop I believe.

Fraud is prevalent daily in the banking industry. The best advise I can give any of you is to put freezes on your credit.  If you ever need to apply for a loan you can always remove the freeze temporarily but its effective. You'll get notified if someone tries to pull it and it is frozen and that can prevent it from ever getting started.

That sucks!! I had a freeze put on my credit at all three agencies several years ago. But even with that last summer I had my CC info stolen and they were making charges. But I check my CC statement fairly often and found it. Called the CC company and was issued a new CC number and card.

I have been wanting for years to join lifelock, just in case.  Today you pushed me over the edge and I just enrolled my whole family.

Everybody I talk to says your throwing away your money with lifelock unless you get their Premium service.  The basic will just confirm your ID was stolen....

I got 60 days to try it out, so we will see.  Even the basic plan will reimburse up to $25,000 in stolen money and provide legal help with Lawyers if needed.  I got 20% off, so not to much to cover us all.
