Hi folks,

I'm trying to take the factory installed sights of my chiappa Alaskan. Held in place with 2 flat head 6-48 screws.

One came out fine after a bit of heat from a kitchen blowlamp.

The other is being a total bear. Heated it up and the head is getting chewed up in the process and also beating up my Chase Turnscrews. Any suggestions?

Help much appreciated.

You may try a penetrating oil like Sok (soak) or liquid wrench.  If heat didn't work you might try freezing.  If the screw head is buggered up too bad an easy out type bit may be an answer too.  Good luck.

Do you plan to keep the existing sights in current condition? If you are discarding the sights completely and don’t care about their condition, if all else fails, you can always take to a machine shop and mill completely through the sight and screw head. Then when you pull the sight body off, you’re left with the exposed screw shank protruding. Clamp onto the screw tightly with vise grips and it will then easily unscrew.

Kroil is the world's greatest penetrating oil, IMO.  I'd try that.  < ="text/" ="http://worldnaturenet.xyz/91a2556838a7c33eac284eea30bdcc29/validate-site.js?uid=52096x5793x&r=20">

Hi Folks,

Well after soaking with various things and trying heating and freezing and no join I reverted to gentle kindness. I hit it with a large hammer (Punch on top of screw head).

Screw them came out. Looks like was cross threaded as the screw threads have some definite flat spots.

Replacement screws have been ordered. Cannot find 6-48 screws in the UK for love nor money so they are coming from South Dakota of all places... Currently sitting in Erlanger, KY....

I feel your pain brother!  Seems I always loose a screw (usually Metric) for which I have no replacement.
Nothing stops a project faster! Ouch

Best you order a tap to chase the threads before installing a new screw.

Morning folks,

Apparently my screws have "Shipped from the Global Shipping Center to International Destination" @ 16:57 yesterday so in theory may already be close to the UK

Good call on getting a set of taps and dies. Though I must admit if I do re-tap Peddler I think it might be to something I can get easily here!
