New to this board. Great wealth of information here.
I have ordered a DPMS .308LR w/ 18" barrel. This rifle has a great reputation for accuracy. I am a full time LEO and I want this weapon set up as a tactical/counter sniper weapon. I am pretty well set up with everything except the scope.
Being a personally owned weapon I need to keep the glass at a reasonable price, $400.00 or less is much prefered. The weapon will be used for target shooting out to 600 yrds., LEO sniper training, and possibly deer hunting. The rifle will also be used for 3-gun competition but I will be using iron sights in the He-Man catagory. I will need a set up that will maintain zero when the scope is removed and then put back on.
I am primarily a handgun hunter with my stands being in the deep woods. I do have a nice stand that overlooks an open field allowing shots from 150 - 500 yrds. This rifle would be used in that stand if I use if for hunting.
I really like the reputation, looks, price of the SS 10x42 and this is my number one choice at this time. My question is this. Is there something else I should be looking at in the price range mentioned. I want Mil-dot reticle, target/tactical knobs. I do not need side focus (like the SS 10x42M has).
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. |

I have the 24" DPMS LR-308. I originally had it set up as more of a varmint rig with a 6-24x Bushnell 4200 Elite. I now have a 10x42 SS on it.
Are they finally shipping them with the steel magazines?
Sounds like you have your different uses planned for it. I found it to heavy of a turd for anything other than bench shooting. Off-hand shooting would be very difficult. I wish i would have opted for the one with the lighter barrel profile.
For <$400, I think the SS is your best choice. Your hunting application does'nt sound like using a fixed 10x will be a huge crutch. |
