Guys, This past weekend I was at a gunshow in Springfield, MO. There was a dealer there with a SS 16x scope for sale. I really thought about buying one of these in the past. I picked up the scope and looked through it and was very disappointed. Now, I'm not bashing SS scopes or anyone that owns one. I will give SS all my respects but this one sucked. The clarity was not very bright at all!!! It was no better than looking through a $30 tasco from walmart! It looked kinda yellow to me and NO I'm not color blind! What do you guys think? Do you guys think this was an older model or something? Did the scopes ever had a run of bad glass issues at any given time? I will give the SS scopes the benefit of doubt and say maybe this particular scope has its own issues. I really like what the SS scopes have to offer. I did play with the turrets some (both windage and elevation) and they were crisp and audible so no problems there. Still unsure what to do. Please, someone enlighten me! Tell me there not all this way. I'm wanting to put a SS on my Savage tactical 300 win mag. I think it would be a good combination. Just not sure!

Ok lets start off by admitting that you were inside a moderately lighted building. Issue #1 when you have a 16 x42 scope take that 42mm and divide that by 16 to find that you only have a 2.625 mm exit eye pupil. Now lay a bright scope like a 6x42 with a 7mm exit eye pupil next to it and which one do you think is going to look brighter. I will say that there are a few old scopes out there during a time when quality control was pre - SWFA ownership that the quality dropped off. but that is history and the new ones and ones on Samplelist are awesome. I do think you would be happier with the 10x and that is what is on my 300 Win Mag since I took off the Leupold Mark 4 10x M3 and sent it to trade in on a new optic that is comming out soon. |

Thanks for your post! I will admit the building had moderate lighting but the dealer had other scopes there as well that were brighter and clearer. I was sure this particular scope had its own problems since I have heard nothing but good things about SS scopes. What you said about pre SWFA ownership's quality control makes lots of sense. This was the only SS scope I had ever seen in person! I've read alot of posts here about SS scopes and everyone seems to be happy with them. I may just have to get one. Thanks again!

I agree with Wes.
The "new" Super Snipers glass quality is good to go. I think I would compare my 10x SS somewhere between a Nikon Buckmaster and a Monarch. |

I really think that the majority of the issue was the small exit eye pupil that the 16x has because the comment about the other scopes were brighter .... and I bet they were not 16x either which gives them a larger exit eye pupil so of course when you look at a 3-9x40 next to a 16x42 which one is going to look brighter - that is true no matter what the quality of glass is. The 10x scope is really the pick of the litter unless you have a special need for the higher power scopes. But what really makes these scopes shine is how well the adjustments work and the fact that the adjustments are repeatable and reliable, which I think is eaven more important than the quality of glass.
