What do you guys think the best scope mounts are for magnum rifles?  Would you go with foreign mounts, such as German mounts, etc. Or do you think that Weaver and Leupolds heavy duty dual dove tail rings and bases will perform just as well?? What are your opinions??

I like the steel Talley mounts on my magnum rifles. They have never failed in over twenty years of use. They also re-zero within moa when removed and remounted.

I've ran different major brands on my lt wt .300 and never had a problem.  Ran a set of Redfield dovetail/windage adjustable ones with a Vari-X III 3.5-10x40AO for 20yrs.  I believe if you stick with the major brands and INSTALL THEM CORRECTLY you'll have no problems.

Leupold QR mounts on my .338 Win Mag.  Never a problem, easy on and off, keeps zero just fine.

I would never use the dovetail with windage adjustable rear from any manufacturer on a heavy recoil gun. I have seen a .338 Lapua with those mounts literally rip the rear ring off the base and I know it was mounted properly because I myself mounted it. I would say Talley that's atleast what I use on my "kickers".

Well that was obviously the problem.  Like you would know how to mount a scope.  Wink

I've seen more than a few windage rear rings with issues, I avoid them like the plague.  I hear dovetail front and rear are fine, but I avoid them too.

Talley, Warne, TPS, Seekins, Badger: all good.

If I can sell a customer a Millet DMS 1-4 while he is looking through it backwards I think I can handle mounting a scope. Wink

I had forgot about that story CFII.  Still cracks me up.  I would have loved to been there when he put it up to his eye after you mounted it!

For the record despite the guy not knowing how to look through a scope properly after being told 4 times including upside down and backwards and still deciding to buy it I did still mount it propely. Then once he looked through it with the gun attached he fell in love with it even more.

Guess I should have added that the windage adjustable ring/base combo wouldn't be my first choice nowadays.

I have standardize don Weaver/Picatinny type mounts and I have not had any problems with them.

Most of my rings are either TPS or Warne with a healthy mix of Leupold, Burris and IOR thrown in.

If I had to stick with one brand, I would probably end up with TPS, although Warne QD rings have been good to me.

I go with the Warne Weaver style bases and rings.  I have two rail mount Euro scopes which I feel are better than the Warnes.
