fwiw....  my soon to be ex-wife did fine with my Sig P2022.  the grip/fit wasn't great.. but she had no problem with the recoil and shot it very well!

I also have a S&W Sheild as my carry... and the grip/fit would be much better... but I think it recoils alot!  these are both in 9mm.

maybe try a 380? if you are looking at a smaller frame.. just a thought.  I have a HiPoint 380 and not a bad "try and see if she's serious"  model.. they are cheap enough.  its gone "Bang" each and every time its trigger has ever been pulled!!
take em!

For a range target gun for someone with smaller hands I would look at a SA XDm 5.25 in 9mm or a XD 9 Tactical.  The HK vp9 or the Sig P320 are both good choices with my preference going towards the Sig. And changing the grips to the Hogue G10 and a Gray Guns intermediate trigger would make the Sig P229 a good choice as well. The G10 grips are slightly thinner but they also shorten the reach to the trigger. I have small hands and all but one of my P series Sigs have G10 grips. The Gray Guns intermediate trigger is slightly longer than the Sig short trigger, but to me and most others it has better leverage. If I was limited to just one 9mm it would be the Sig 229 with G10 grips and an intermediate trigger.

SVT_Tactical,
All the pistols that have been suggested are great but I do know from experience that if SHE don't like the pistol you get her SHE won't shoot it very much. I suggest you take her to a gun show and let her pick up as many pistols as she can to find one that feels good in her hand. Then make a list of the pistols SHE liked and try to find some friends or a range that has them for her to try.

I will say that women are inclined to pick cute little pistols because they think they will not recoil so bad and because they are cute. If this is going to be a carry pistol then that is fine but if this is going to be a target/plinking pistol she should seriously consider a pistol that is a full size or compact. This size pistol is easier to control because the weight reduces the felt recoil, the bigger frame is easier to hold and the longer sight radius is more accurate.

My 12 & 14 year old daughters have been shooting Glock 22 (with Lonewolf 9mm conversion barrels) for 2 years now and they really enjoy them. When my friends are looking for a pistol for their wives to carry I readily suggest the Glock 19/23 because they work (as long as they don't weak wrist them). My wife likes her little S&W 940 revolver which is like a S&W 642 but the 940 is 9mm (I know a 9mm revolver with moon clips is cool huh?). My wife likes to shoot it but my daughters both hate it because the recoil is too sharp.

Good luck on getting your wife involved in the shooting sports.

The Sig 938 is a small, reliable, easy to chamber, and it hits where you point it. If you can find one where she can get a chance to shoot it, she will likely fall in love with it. It has the weight to controll the recoil without being heavy to carry.

My wife's two favorite pistols are her Walther PP22 and her Springfield XDs 9mm. She has a Sig 238 that she likes all but the trigger pull. She also likes the feel of my Range Officer but she hasn't shot it yet because it's being chambered in 45acp intimidates her little. If she likes mine at all she may end up with a 9mm version.

G,
You may want to see if you can find the new XDS 9mm with the 4" barrel locally.

They are pretty neat. They are the same width and build as the original XDS, just a longer barrel. They also come with one 7-round magazine and one 9-rounder with the sleeve. This allows you to have more of a full-size grip feel at the range, but still allowing you to shorten it back down for everyday carry.

Then you kill two birds with one stone since you won't have to drop more cash on a separate carry pistol when she is ready!

My girlfriend has become a Glock fanatic since I started doing the ZEV upgrades. At 5' flat, she handles her modified G23C like a pro!

Ok.  I'm really thinking the G19 might be the way to start.

Did you take any photos when you did your grip reduction/shaping on your glock frames?

If your going to buy another Glock and then spend the money to update it to 2014 standards, take five minutes and research the HK vp9, just sayin'.   Whistling

I did not. I already planned on doing a step-by-step with pictures the next one I do.

Before you start reducing the grip though, you will want to check her natural aiming point.

Have her hold one of your Glocks at shoulder level with arms extended in a firing position, but have her do it with her eyes closed. When she is set and comfortable, tell her to open her eyes but do not adjust the gun or try to line the sights up yet. First, have her adjust the gun to correct for any left or right sight error. Once the sights are centered left and right, have her tell you which way she is off up and down.

If she is aiming high, the back of the grip or "Glock Hump" needs to be reduced.
If she is low or in line, no reduction is necessary.

You can also repeat this on a 1911 with a flat mainspring housing and see if the up and down is any better. If it is, she has a natural aiming point suited for a 1911-style grip angle.

I don't take any at all out of the hump on my Glocks. I do most of my reduction on the front of the grip. I deepen the finger grooves and sort of bring them around the grip a little more. I then undercut the trigger guard, allowing a higher grip on the gun and eliminating the "Glock Knuckle" pain after a long day at the range. This is where the grip has the most material so you won't have to worry about messing with all the epoxy fillers or weakening the frames structure. IMO, Glock grips don't need much reduction, they just need a little help being more ergonomic!

Here are some shots of it finished though so you can see the contour. Undercutting the trigger guard where it meets the front of the grip is the first thing I do to any Glock I get. That little modification makes a world of difference IMO.

well I had her test a G22 tonight.  She liked the feel and simple controls, grip was a little to big but she could still pull the trigger.  We are going to still go this weekend and look at others.

Not sure the grip size on that HK compared to the glock Mike,  can you compare the two?

The vp9 grip has interchangeable sidepanels and backstraps (s,m,l).

How does the small compare to a G19 grip?
